I was surprised to see that there was not an archive for this great little lens. An older lens that was released in the 90's, but with great optical performance and a nice feature set. One of Canon's initial attempts at an UWA lens and the little brother to an L lens with the same focal range.

Not as wide as many of its EF cousins (nor as long) but above average build quality, metal lens mount, distance scale, internal focusing and full time manual focusing through the inclusion of a fast and silent ring USM focusing motor. Also a slightly faster aperture offering than many less expensive wide angle lenses with f/3.5 on the wide end and f/4.5 on the long.

Hopefully starting this thread will prove that there are a few people still out there using this hidden gem of a lens. I will post some recent samples that I have taken to kick things off.

From a recent car show here in my town.....

Ben,

You actually had the "L" version of this lens - this archive thread is for the non-L version that has the ring USM focusing motor and the variable aperture. What tipped me off initially - even before viewing your comparison photo - was the fact that you mentioned focusing noise as this less expensive version has none of that with the USM motor. They did not give the L the same USM motor.

Nice shots though!:) The "L" version has an archive thread here that is in desperate need of samples as well.

This is what the non-L version looks like - and it is also built very well in my opinion and it actually is quite light.

I just picked up this lens on craigslist for the pittance of $80, and I am so impressed with it that I'm considering selling my 18-55mm IS. The sharpness wide open is surprisingly crisp, even the corners are decent on my 30D. The USM is great and I love the fully-internal zoom mechanism.

Finally! another regular poster with this lens to add to this thread! I too am a big fan of this lens and think its another hidden gem from Canon's past - similar to the 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5. Looking forward to seeing some of your shots with the lens.

You got a great deal on it too......my local craigslist never has photographic gems like that.

Funny story... It was listed for $50, I called the guy and agreed to meet him. About 5 minutes down the road he calls and tells me that he's received ten emails in the past half hour and he thinks he might have undercharged. I ask him what he wanted for it and he said "I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I think I'll have to ask $80." Of course that was fine by me!

I bought this lens thinking I would not be too impressed with it and ultimately sell it for a healthy profit, but it just keeps churning out consistently-great, sharp images! I will have samples soon. I am currently without an internet connection (using my BlackBerry).

That is the kind of seller I NEVER see on my local craigslist! You did get a smokin' deal on it as they can sell for close to $200 in good condition. (And they are worth that amount.)

Still looking for some samples from your lens! ;)

Are you going to buy it?Well, thanks to the help here, I made an educated offer ...seems a bit lower than the seller thinks it's worth, but she's open and this lens will possibly be part of a package of other things I hope to buy from her.

I hope to use the lens for birthday parties and such .....looks like it might be a good/reasonable solution.

I will as soon as I get the lens. Currently looking at one priced at $260 AUS, probably a bit pricey, but they don't seem to come up all that often. Once in the bag, I'll get some Australiana happening ;). I am only a newbie, the last time I picked up a camera was 20 years ago. So bear with me guys, I can only get better.

As a side effect, I'm pretty bitter about where you live now too.....

roopaw
14th of March 2010 (Sun), 16:34
Thanks for that, it is a great place to live and even with the poor weather this weekend, still opportunities for the odd shot or two.

As for the EXIF, this is the first shot:

Exposure: 0.067 sec (1/15)
Aperture: f/22.0
Focal Length: 20 mm
ISO Speed: 100

and this is the blue one

Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/8.0
Focal Length: 20 mm
ISO Speed: 400

There's quite a lot more EXIF detail at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/roopaw/4431079309/meta/in/photostream

bauerman
15th of March 2010 (Mon), 08:58
That 20mm focal length is pretty fun to play with photographically. And this lens is pretty sharp overall. I think that you will find you can shoot at f/3.5 as well and the sharpness is still primarily there. That is not something you can say about a lot of today's kit lenses.

roopaw
15th of March 2010 (Mon), 16:09
I'll give that a try this weekend. One thing I did notice about f/22 is that I really need to clean my sensor!

bauerman

Nothing special about this shot of my wife sitting in our SUV.....other than it was taken wide open at f/3.5 and the sharpness is very apparent. Here is the original shot and a 100% crop of her mouth......no additional sharpening or processing - right out of the camera. This same shot with other lenses I have owned would have been so soft at this aperture....

Here's some shots wide open, or very close to it. The flower and leaf shots are more or less 100% crops as my original framing wasn't great. They've also been subjected to fairly heavy-handed pp, but I'm not averse to the noise and the effect it gives.

Thank you.

I think overall, yes, I am. I really wanted the 17-40mm and if budget allowed, the 16-35mm. But as they're roughly 4 and 8 times more expensive, that's not going to happen right now.

The 20-35mm allows me to get the effects I want and will stay on my camera until hopefully I pick up some skills that might justify an L.

Hi Everyone...
so this is my first post here...

I first want to say this forum is awesome!..I'm learning so much!
Anyhow, as I was cleaning out my garage and doing some weekend cleanup, I found my 20-35mm Lense and I was like, "I completeley forgot I had this!" And then I searched here to find what you guys thought of this lense and well, decided to give it a whirl again....I love this lense. I have the 24-70L lense wich is awesome, but so heavy, and this lense is just great. LIght, sharp, etc.

So I decided to take it to my friends pool party he has and these shots came out great.

Loved seeing my little 4 year old lugging around my 30D......worried about the 30D.....but still liked watching it. The owners of the cars did all the work on the chrome, that is for sure. I simply pointed a quality Canon lens at their work.

Thanks bauerman. The white building looks to be the the sales office for the upscale residential housing development at the Royal Pines golf course. A fairly mundane purpose, but the developer isn't the sort to settle for run-of-the-mill.

The mountain image is nothing special, and the light/haze was strong, but I wanted to give the "new" lens a try. I like the colors it produces, and I think it will be my go-to lens for hiking. :-)

This image is shrunk way down... The original is pretty sharp.

one of the attractions of the 20-35 is that it's compact....adding a shade seems a bit much...I can always use the old hand shade when needed...but thanks for the info...I see that the knockoff sells for $4...nice...

I should also mention that it's a great combination with the 28-105 and 70-210....all of the 3.5-4.5 series...

...and .....it now means I have a nice "kit" of lenses for a nice 5D if I can find one... :)

Well my 20-35 has a problem....it's become a 24-35mm lens...
No problem between 24 and 35 but it only works occasionally below 24mm...

I get Err 01 between 20 and 24mm...and the clean contacts recommendation...

I thought I hoped that it was a just contact cleaning issue, but apparently it's something else...

Any suggestions....?

Got a suggested "test" an FM...to use the DoF preview to see if there's a problem with the aperture...and...

Well....I guess it's a sticky aperture...

@ 20mm the DoF preview button has a prolonged buzz at near wide open apertures e.g. 4.5, 5.6

...there's no extended buzz at 24mm and longer nor at smaller apertures (F8 and smaller)

@ 20mm the aperture does close down to apertures F8 and smaller with no Error message and that's okay as in all likelihood I'd use F8 for that FL anyway for better edge to edge sharpness...

It also means that indoors or in low light (shooting wide open) I'm limited to 24mm and narrower FLs...when shooting group shots I wouldn't use 20mm anyway (to limit distortion of people at the edge)

Maybe over time using the smaller apertures (<F8) may be a fix...

Unfortunately the lens fails too often to be of serious use...a sad loss....

I think you really would have enjoyed a functional copy of this lens. I think it's one of those "oldies but goodies". If I decide to sell mine, I'll keep you in mind!

The shots posted by me in this thread during the last 12 months or so are from my 5D and if you have a look at the first page of my Flickr photostream, apart from the first 3 shots, the rest are from the 5D.

For a lens that costs about $200 on eBay, I'm very happy.

Thanks! I just picked one up in excellent condition for pretty cheap 170$. My 19-35 quantaray comes in the mail this friday. I'm going to keep one and sell the other but I'll be sure to do some comparisions tests. So far this lens is handling pretty well. 5.6 is as sharp as I would ever want. The vignette at 20mm and f3.5 bothers me a bit but it's overall pretty good wide open.

Lightroom automatically applies Sharpening = 25 to my shots as part of the RAW conversion/import and I find I still need to add a bit more to that.

Don't suppose you'd share the processing steps & settings for the images above? (or in-camera JPEG settings if not shooting RAW).
