I went out to play with my friend's camera again today, and went over to the Los Angeles Equestrian center. I figured I'd spend some time, and see what I could see. Every weekend, for the most part, there are shows going on; kids showing their ponies, parents showing their thoroghbreds, and stuff like that. Lots of action, lots of different lighting, lots of challenges.
Except...I pulled up, and was surprised to see that there's a Charity event hosted by William Shatner. Somehow, I manage to sweet-talk myself into signing a release, getting a "Staff" shirt; lo and behold, I'm a volunteer! Seems being Irish can come in handy on occasion, no? I didn't get onto the arena floor - my borrowed camera wasn't big enough, I guess - but I spent some really fun time walking around, getting behind the scenes, taking photos of the performers as they were waiting, the horses as they were waiting, and some photos of people.
I felt like such an imposter when I was standing there, at the stage entrance, when the guy from Getty Images and another from another mag (dunno which one...I asked, but I forgot) were there. Both of them with big, honking lenses (L series...sigh/drool), several cameras around their necks, and all the accoutrements dangling from various parts of their body. They got to go down onto the arena floor, but I didn't. I tried to sneak in with them, but no joy...
'Twas fun! And for a moment, I felt like a papparazzi (or however it's spelled...) when Shatner pulled up and was sitting there...a flurry of elbows, shouts of "Bill!!" and pushing around for "the" shot. I backed out of the fray quickly 'cause that's just no fun, but other than that, I had a ball.
I'll see if there's anything postable, and if so, I'll get them up. If not, I learned a ton, had a ball, and am smiling tiredly right now.
I hope you all had as fun a day as I did!
