I've been searching around and asking questions about filters for a 100mm macro lens. I have seen something called a "Close Up" filter. Is this something you would get if you dont own a true macro lens?...Or would it enhance one?
(the descriptions aren't very clear)
Thank You
Kevin

Think you would be better off considering a set of extension tubes (eg Kenkos)
If you have the 100mm macro lens then you need to get some fairly high quality add on diopter filters eg Raynox or Opteka make some reasonably priced add on dioptres with good chromatic performance. The cheaper ones do suffer from chromatic aberrations. You really need to get upto + 10 dioptre though to get a reasonable magnification (+10 would give you 2:1 on your macro lens same as a full set of kenko ext tubes).

Thanks Brian. Actually I do own a set of the Kenko tubes...I've been using them with my 50 1.8 for a kind of simulated macro. But then I saw a deal on the Canon 100mm macro that I couldn't pass up. So now that you know my set-up...do you still suggest that filter?
Thank You,
Kevin

Think i'd wait a while- get used to the 100mm macro and then the 100mm macro with extension tubes. If you are still lusting after more magnification after that you could always reverse your 50mm lens onto the 100mm macro lens.
