I'm on the verge of buying a new PC but, not a big fan of Vista so I was wondering if MS has a projected release date? For those who tried the initial release what did you think?
Good points? Bad? One little thing that bigs me about Vista is not having the ability to sort a folder of photos by date, name etc. (or at least if you can in Vista I can't figure out how). Thanks in advance.

Don't buy a new computer until after June 26th if you want a free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Read here.

You need to change your Windows Explorer view to "Details" if you want to sort by name or date. It's pretty lame though. Here's a great free software for sorting and viewing all your photos and for viewing photo details. It's much more convenient than simply using Windows Explorer. You can even use it to do minor editing.

A friend I had dinner with last night is one of the testers. You may not like 7 any more than Vista. Me, I'm sticking with XP until I can't any more. (I own a copy.)

It will officially go on sale in October in store shelves, perhaps available as download in July after RTM.

Ya, I'd like to hear more about it to. I've heard that it is going to be more like XP than Vista, but I can't guarantee the source.

Windows 7 runs 10 times better than Vista.
Win7 is what Vista "should" have been in the first place.
I've had it install on all my PC's ( 3 ), a P4 2.4 being the slowest with 1GB of RAM and it works well.
It uses slightly more RAM than XP does, but you can counter that by turning off most of the goodies Win7 comes with.
I for one "will" be buying a copy when it's released on Oct. 22

I've heard that it is going to be more like XP than Vista, but I can't guarantee the source. The example I remember was that you have to rely more on desktop icons than ever before and to show the desktop you have to move your mouse into a corner of the screen (your open windows will become transparent). When you try to move the mouse to click an icon, guess what? Yep, the open windows aren't transparent any more. You have to move the mouse to a corner AND click.

Ideally, you want the OS to use all of your memory.
Free memory is wasted memory.
And I'll be installing Win7 on all my machines when it is released. I am currently running Win7 on my Dell mini 9 and it runs incredibly good. I was quite surprised as the mini isn't a high powered machine.
I am currently running Vista Ultimate 64bit on my machines and will not go back to XP, ever. XP is crap next to Vista SP2.
I should have installed Vista when I first bought it in 2006, but held off since I didn't want to reinstall all my apps.

Tell your friend to just key in Win+D to Show/Hide the desktop, no mouse required. :)

Windows 7 is not XP, it is different, it is new, it won't take long to learn... because it's pretty well thought out. Patience.

OH MY GOD!!!!
THATS TERRIABLE!
How can I be expected to MOVE my mouse, and, and this, is the part I can't believe, CLICK!
I much prefer Vista where I move my mouse to the "show desktop" icon and click on it.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

LOL...
my mac has expose, and the corners allow you to view desktops, and view application windows specific to that window. It's great!
another feature i like about windows 7 is when you want to maximize a window. rather than clicking on the maximize window button on the application bar, you can just drag the window to the top of the desktop and it'll maximize the window for you! its GREAT!
cant wait to see multitouch be used for screens. wouldnt photo editing be easier with multitouch? well multitouch with really really high accuracy due to high dpi and a perfectly calibrated screen?

I don't see how clicking and dragging to maximize is any easier than one click ;)

lol.. it's easier when you are using a 30" monitor and the buttons are so gash darn small. its a lot quicker to grab a FAT bar and you are used to that motion of dragging to the top to maximize a window.

to maximize I just double click the window bar on the top (I have no idea what its actually called...)
I beta test windows 7, and I find it to be extremely better then vista, much less bugs, much less crap, really.
But still, I'm reluctant to switch from XP from 7 anytime soon... XP being a 9 year old OS and all...I might dual boot my next computer (if/when I get one)and see how 7 works for me.

Well, I installed Windows 7 the day after the beta became available, hoping that I could trash it like I do Vista. Alas, I cannot. I quite like it.

Just a little side note... my better half wanted Win 7 on her single core AMD 1800 mhz, 1gig ram machine after seeing it on mine, so she now dual boots from XP. I don't think she's even been into XP but a couple times to retrieve files or settings since putting 7 on it. It runs as well if not better in Win 7 on her older/slower puter than XP. As she is on a puter all day at her job, she just uses it for web, email, and playing Hearts (she loves the new version that's bundled w/windows :)).
If you can't wait till it goes on sale, I would install the RC version and get familiar with it, over installing XP or Vista at this point. When it does go on sale, just use Windows Easy Transfer (http://www.lytebyte.com/2009/05/05/how-to-transfer-windows-7-settings-files-and-users-windows-easy-transfer/) to setup the official Win 7 release the way you have already tweaked it while in beta.

I noticed this on my laptop. Running at 2.2ghz I believe, dual core, and only 1gb of ram. XP runs well, but can get bogged down with only 1gb ram. My friends with the same laptop (school's laptop) noticed that vista was slow on it so I haven't upgraded to vista - its free for me to do so.
I installed windows 7 on it the other day cause I have 2 computers and hardly use my laptop/wanted to try w7 on it. It is, IMO, faster than xp. It runs flawlessly, I love the way everything is organized etc. I'm building a new computer today actually, and will be putting windows 7 RC on it until 7 comes out for real.
It is really not a hog like vista, and it is really just a big improvement on vista - what vista should have been.

Don't buy a new computer until after June 26th if you want a free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Read here.
To my knowledge the date has not been confirmed by Microsoft yet.
Since I am soon going to buy a new pc I checked with the dealer I am going to order from and they received the same information. Free upgrade offer for Vista to Windows 7 from 26th june.
However in Europe Windows 7 will not be delivered with Internet Explorer. That migth not be a problem for many but that means it will NOT be possible to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. A re-install will be required..... That sucks big time
So I guess I will just install Vista on the new machine and then install VMware workstation to run everything else for easier transition to windows 7. ( I can't wait until october/november to buy a new pc to get it pre-installed with windows 7).
Does anybody know if it will be possible to upgrade from the release candidate without doing a full re-install ?

MS are talking about releasing a version with out IE, as an option to appease the EU courts who are hammering them for anti-competitive behaviour.

I thought I heard a news report a few days ago that said the EU courts informed MS they did not want them to remove IE, but to ADD other browsers so consumers have a choice. Maybe I heard wrong info.

I'm using Avast antivirus with Windows 7. It works very well and is also free for home users.

I read something similar.
I think they are still trying to work out what to do about it.

I'm happy with Kaspersky, it happily let me use the same license on XP, Vista, and Win 7. (all three are on the same machine though) Even though they had a beta version for Win 7 at the time, I just installed the Vista version no problem.

Now isn't that a croc? When they sue to have IE removed, Microsoft says fine, pull the plug on IE... then they whine... saying no... you misunderstand... we want you to leave IE, just include some other browsers on our list. (I guess implying that users in the EU are unable to locate & download the browser of their choice on their own)
