My friend have a nikon and we compare shots every now and then.. I just sometimes envy the colours of his shots.. especially in outdoors and mid-day. His' has more colours and saturation than i have. Though I'm not really sure if it's just the LCD or the real thing. His camera is a Nikon D80. Mine is Canon 450D. Is these two incomparable?

D80 might be more comparable with a 40D or 50D in terms of build quality, features, price etc. Many factors you haven't mentioned: whether either or both of you are using preset modes that introduce extra saturation etc.. Definitely not worth worrying much about different camera LCD screens though: it's the image as seen by the end viewer that matters: be it on computer screen or paper. Cheers, Tony

The LCD screen does not give an accurate impression of what the final results will be. For on thing, the LCD image is merely a very-quickly rendered JPEG at the current camera settings.

Nikon tends to do more processing to their images in camera.

Saturation can be increased or decreased in a camera's menu. If you adjust the 450D's saturation in the picture styles menu, (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS450D/page14.asp) you can make the images' colors match any other camera on the market.

I currently also have an Olympus and has also tried out a Nikon D50 and in RAW, I've noticed that the colors of Canon RAW images and much more muted and often less accurate than the Olympus. I think you can shoot with modified picture styles to get more saturation if you shoot in JPEG or Process the RAW images in DPP, which recognize the picture styles. However, I've not found a good working solution to get the colors more accurate. Setting custom WB continuously outside is not feasible for the type of shooting that I do.

The d80/90 is in the same class as the XSi/T1i: upper tier entry level model.

Huh? That's a new one.

You might call it that, but that doesn't mean it falls into the same category relative to Canon models. Depending on who you ask, the D80/90 slides in either right before or right after the 40/50D, but always above a Rebel/100-series Canon.

Back to the OP: the only way to compare is to compare the raw images on a computer. The preview has in-camera Jpeg processing applied, and the LCD itself may or may not be accurate.

Oh no, not another "where does Nikon xxx and CAnon xxxx fall" topic.

The newsroom has D70s, but I've never directly compared images side by side.

Don't compare pictures on a camera LCD, it's just not very accurate. My 400D shows everything too yellow while my 40D has a very blue tint, yet on a computer screen they're the same.
