I like the first shot a lot, not a lot to critique really, maybe a bit more saturation, but ve3ry good capture. The B/W doesnt' really do it for me, not enough contrasting shades.

Both shots look a wee bit oversharpened to me.

If I had to add criticism, its's a bit over sharpened that all I have to say about both pictures.

Yes, over-sharpened. So you can recognise this yourself - and know when to stop - I'll explain how to assess it. In #1, look at the line where the black beanie meets the boy's skin: there's actually a row of pixels that are brighter than the skin. This is the way sharpening accentuates the transitions between contrasting regions, but when that line is easily visible, that means you've gone too far.
The colour in #1, and not having the sky completely over-exposed, makes it a more successful outcome than #2, even though in my opinion the more dynamic pose in #2 is the more interesting, and the lens cap is featured better: sure to please photographers :-). So, it's worth seeing if you can do something with the colour version of #2: especially if you shot in RAW and didn't already try to recover the highlights when converting to JPEG, it's worth going back and playing with the conversion settings....
Cheers, Tony

Thanks Tony for taught me how to recognize the OE. Your details of explaination will help me a whole lot to PP them better. I will go back and re-PP them and report back again.

Was this shot in RAW or jpeg?
The first shot is on an angle. It is rather distracting. Try looking to align the houses to run on a horizontal line. This will also correct that the boy is leaning to the left side. Also, if shot in RAW, the sky it blown out of detail. Try using some recovery to bring back some of what was lost. If you are shooting in jpeg, DON'T. Learn to use RAW and learn to use Photoshop or some image software. In today's digital world, Photoshop is the darkroom that you develop your shots. It's the difference between taking a snapshot with your SLR and being serious about taking photographs.
That said, the second shot needs to be converted to B&W properly. You are loosing way too much detail in the process. The blades of grass for instance have a white band on the highlighted side. Your sky looks like it's a white backdrop. You have blown out the skin, eyes and most of the clothing.
Sorry to be harsh, but learning a bit about the Zone system would help you out quite a bit if you decide to do any more B&W shots.
Matt.

Thanks Matt for spent the time!!!
Those were taken in RAW. I will take both Tony and your advices to improve them. No need to say sorry, you are just teaching what I do not know. Thanks again Matt!

Great subject. Maybe a bit too sharp. Perhaps moving back just a bit and/or positioning the subject a bit off-center would be better. Just my 2 cents worth.
