Who has Canon 1DS? How do you like it?

I don't own one. The only 1DS that I have seen in use was carried by a photographer for the San Jose Mercury News. Maybe that is a message in itself.

The image that was published in the newspaper the next day was kind of plain, but that is what newspapers do to a good image.

Mine arrived at the end of last week. Haven't had much good light since then, but the timing was good as my D30 shutter packet up just prior to that (28,000+ images aren't good for those shutters).

Immediate thoughts:
- It's a tank.
- Awesome picture size and quality.

Day Two thoughts
- The controls and industrial design are a little sexier than the D30.
- Image wise it's like 4 D30s strapped together.
- The software's more mature than the D30s was.
- I'm still waiting for my 24-70 to use with it.

I borrowed a 1D and I didn't think that it was any better than a D30, although the 8fps was amusing it wasn't much use in practice (I tend to shoot action sports but I'm old enough to know when to press the shutter).

The D60 looked ok but it's not that different from a D30, IMHO.

I haven't had time to print anything out yet (still working on 3,000 snowboarding pictures from my D30), but I can tell from my [huge, colour balanced] CRT that they're going to be... well, like D30 pictures only bigger.

So it's kind of:
1Ds = 2*D60 = 4*D30
except cost wise it's not linear. Do you need it? Not unless you are incapable of viewfinder cropping or want to print larger than A3. Is it nice? Ohhhh yes.

Now I have to get a job, I really do.

Sounds good to me...

But I was reluctant to pay £2000 for a D60 let alone £6500 for a 1Ds.
Canon or Fuji are going to explode this market with big mega pixel cameras at D60 prices that's a cert.

The best thing about the 1Ds is the full 35mm frame sensor...that's the main reason Canon have dropped the D60 too many complaints about lenses not being compatable...even their own !

As yet my need for 11MPs does not yet justify £6.5 Gs.
I am happy to wait for Mr Canon to produce the full frame D90s, 9 MP at just over £2500 less lens.

When...June 2003 mark my words.

I used one at a Canon Roadshow in UK. If I had the work for it I would buy one. However, I would also have to upgrade my PC, memory cards etc as the files are huge. You have to see an A3 from this camera to appreciate how good it is. The detail is amazing. I am not worried about full frame. 1.3x on my 1D is OK with me. If the doubled the pixels with cmos sensor on that and gave 5-6fps I would be more than happy. It will happen, maybe next month at PMA in the USA. david

I got mine about a month and a half ago and love it. I'm doing tests right now that are next to film scans. Creating my own custom curves for effects. This camera Rocks. Sometimes I wish it was faster ,but most of the time I need to just slow down.
I cannot wait to see all the cool actions Fred Miranda will make.
I'm selling the 2/14 system I have. and my 35mm
Now I have a 1Ds and 1D backup. I do this for a living and surley have clients to make it all worth while. I feel that I am gaining more clients the further into digital I go.
