I think it is always easier to back away from a subjec to get a wider view, but for long range stuff, it's always tougher to get closer...especially with sports photography. I personally like the zoom capabilities...however, now that I have regular, medium and long range covered, I find myself yearning for very wide capabilities with that fish bowl look as well as telephoto type zoom capabilities (300+). Tough call.

Tokina 20-35mm f2.8 AT-X 235 AF PRO - B&H Price : $ 479.95
Canon 70-200mm F4 - B&H Price After Rebate: $ 554.95

You may pick up the 70-200 F4 cheaper second hand without much trouble and that then brings you below $1000 by quite a way ... enough to take the wife out for dinner at leat

If 20mm is not wide enough then I dunno. I am only interested in this lens and the 17-40 F4 L for wide. I don't need ultra wide and these seem the best price/quality options to me.

Fits nicely with your 50mm II as well! You can add a 1.4x extender if you need more length in future. Kenko Pro 300 is recommended good value/performance.

Personally, I'd choose the 17-40L and 85 f/1.8 combination. The former is great for landscapes and architecture while the 85 is awesome for portraits and street photography.

I have a feeling you really can't go wrong either way.

If my budget were $1000, I'd get the Tamron 28-75mm/2.8 Xr Di and 70-200 f/4L for about $900 after rebates, and you could also pick up a kit lens for wide angle use for around $70-80 and still be under $1000.

Another choice is the Tamron 17-35 for WA Zoom. Choice of "walkaround" : Tamron 28-75 or Telephoto: 70-200/f4 L. I don't have a WA Zoom, sold the Sigma 18-125 to get the Tamron 28-75, needed more speed indoors. Of course you could get the 18-125 B+H for $270.

Your choice.

That combo is probably the way I'd go, as well. I've already got the 85mm, so half the battle is fought.

Nice that the wife approved the new lens. Around here, it's like going through a Senate subcommitee to get anything from the ol' savings account...

Ya know, that seems to be a common trend around here. I guess I should be in a hurry to get all my lenses now, before I get married...and before she can say no :D

Hm. I'd say.... Sigma 24-70/2.8 or 24-60/2.8 and the 700-200/4L. You can also throw in the MC Zenitar 16mm Fishy w/M42 to EOS adatper and call it a day :D

That way you've got a fishy, a fast normal zoom, and the awesome L quality telephoto :)

Yeah I think I will be happier with the 17-40 because it will probably be used more often than a long zoom. Maybe I will just beg for the 17-40 and 70-200........

It never hurts to beg. Since you have the 50/1.4, it would make sense to get a 17-40/4L and a 70-200/4L.

If she won't budge on the $1000, I would go for one of these combinations depending on whether the wide end or the long end is more important to you:

1. Canon 17-40/4L plus Tamron 28-75/2.8
2. Tamron 28-75/2.8 plus Canon 70-200/4L

Yeah I think I will be happier with the 17-40 because it will probably be used more often than a long zoom. Maybe I will just beg for the 17-40 and 70-200........

For portraits, I love the 85 1.8 however I do understand that the 70-200 f4L yields great portraits also. I'd recommend the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (I have this and it's a great lens) and the 70-200 F/4L (my next lens).

1,000 yen wouldn't get you much of a lens!

Here's another vote for the Tamron 24-75mm & 70-200mm f/4L combo.
I've been very pleased with the Tamron and the other, well, it's an L lens that still allows you to get under the $1k bogey.
Oh, and congratulations on getting your kitchen pass to buy your new glass 8-}

At the current exchange rate, 1000 Yen = $9.56 USD. Accuvue 2 disposable contacts are $15.99/box mail order. Any other suggestions?

Maybe a disposable contact lens

Man, I know how that feels. I go through the same process and I get subpoenaed every now and then until the purchase.

The Tamron 28-75 is a good lens, i'll have the 50 1.4 and 70-200 IS to compare it with soon :)

I'm always messing that up. :o
I have no intention of getting rid of my 50mm f/1.4 although it is the Tamron and the -sweet!- 70-200mm f/2.8L IS that's on my camera 95% of the time.
It will be interesting to know what your experience is going forward.

Cheers! and to boomerrang, Happy Shopping whatever your final choices!!

Looks like the winner is 17-40 & 85 1.8

Hopefully in time she will understand my need for a 70-200......Im not sure how to make her understand but I will. Will have to go on Safari!

In a side note I love my 50mm1.4 and would leave it on all the time but have been in to many tight settings recently and could not get the shots I was looking for.

For about $1000 I'd consider the 24-70L. My thinking is to consider one lens that stays on your camera most the time rather than continually swapping lens. I love my 17-40, but unless I know I'm going to be needing wide angle it's just too short for me for a general purpose lens and I'm contually swapping lenses. If that seems too much to pay for one lens, consider the Tamron 28-75. You can't go too wrong with any of the combo's you're looking at though.

Boomerang,
You state that hopefully your wife will understand your need for a 70-200….
Tell her you understand her need for a new sewing machine and she will under stand...
The 70-200 has the ability to capture all of her beauty…..
You can do it.:)

Cheers
