View Full Version : Digital Rebel XT (350) AF Assist Beam Problem

Wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if I have a defective camera.

Set the CF #5 to "emits" however, the flash (both built in and 380 EX external) only send out the auto focus assist lamp in the "Basic Zone" modes and not in "Creative Zone". Same result when CF #5 is set to "only emits ext. flash", & obviously the 380 is attached. The manual states "In the Creative Zone modes when you pop-up the built-in flash with the <flash> button, the AF-assist beam will be fired when necessary". While it does work in "Basic Zone", it has never fired in any "Creative Zone" mode. As a test, I would think that firing it up in a darkened closet with the lens cap on would qualify as "necessary", however, nothing.

Any thoughts?

What focus mode are you using? SingleShot/AI Focus or AI Servo? The AF assist beam won't be emitted in AI Servo mode.

Also, make sure that, if you have focusing set to the "*" button that you are pressing the "*" button instead of the shutter button.

Leo,

You nailed it. Thanks for pointing out my duhness!

Just switched to the Rebel XT and rarely used AF on my film body, preferring manual focus. Unfortunately, the viewfinder in this new camera is too dim for me to use in low light, so I'll have to rely on AF. Guess I'll have to learn how to use it!

Thanks for the quick replies.
