Any entomologists know what kind of flies these are? They're hovering all over the place, they're large and they appear to be territorial, chasing one another off.

If you are in Southern Georgia or in Florida, they are the black flies whose corpses decorate the front of every car, truck and mobile home by the thousands... as for the real, scientific name, I think they are painicus butticus. :D

I found my California Insects book, it is a cactus fly, feeds on decaying cholla and prickly pear cacti. They are in the hover fly family Syrphidae and they have no shame.

Definitely NOT Florida love bugs.
