Hiya
I got a Hoya Pro1D CPL from HVStar. Seems to look good to the human eye, however when layed on a laptop TFT the waffle seems to be wavy. As in there are a few streaks in it where its subtly lighter.
Does any one elses CPL look like this?
Best,
Tim

LCD displays use polarization to control the light, so what you were probably seeing was a moire pattern from the individual cells reacting with the polarizer.

Very common to see wavy lines or other interference patterns thru a polarizer. You can see stress lines in laminated windshields or the plastic window over speedometers, for example.

nah it wasn't a moire pattern, wasn't regular at all. It was almost like smears on glass.
This is definitely in the filter, as it moved with the filter.

In the filter? How much did you pay for that Hoya at HVStar?

$79 plus a bit in shipping.

What size filter at that price? Was it the Hoya Pro 1 Digital Circular Polarizer
And what prompted you to lay it on top of the TFT?

77m and yes Pro 1 D CPL
Wanted to check it out, and the best polarized light source I had was a MacBook TFT display. Was checking for colour shifts through the axis.
I doubt its going to cause much issue in the pics, as it can only been on the more extreme (ie blocking more than 50%) axis. Let see if I actually see anything in pictures.

Did you buy it to use on your lens, or look at a laptop screen? Put it on a lens and shoot and then check your images. Also, get a good lens cleaning fluid and see if you can remove the streaks or smudges...certain Hoya coatings are known to be difficult to clean. As far as Hvstar goes (now maxsaver), I've purchased a a handful of B+W polarizers, aswell as several ND filters, without any problems. Try cleaning it and then shooting with it in good light...if there are any issues, send it back.

^ and simply fog with your breath, not using a cleaning fluid, when you try to clean it off.

Surely its of most use when attached to a laptop? My mom said it was a post production tool ;)
Yeah I've given it a clean and will be strapping it to a 85L for a outdoor wedding i'm going to. I'm sure it'll be fine, just wondered if it was something any one else had seen. 77mm is a big old hunk, so must be impossible to keep the middle element totally flat when making it. Plus the heat applied during the coating does warp the meat in the glass sandwich.

You should try shooting through a CPL using polarized sunglasses. Very interesting and probably the same patterns you are seeing.

Does yours look like that in the picture? ( I sharpened it to bring out the waves or streaks or whatever hoya calls 'em )
I am quite sure its original... any feedback would be great as it would put me at more ease when I shoot with this filter on... might get a better one like B+W if my case is an exception from 'normal' hoya cpl filter patterns lol

Hi
Nope the issue I was looking at was like the waffle inside wasnt 100% flat. There was only 7-9 waves so to speak. It hasnt effected the image quality so I let that dog slumber.
