View Full Version : Dance Talent Showcase

The year-end recital or "talent showcase" for my daughter's dance club.

Lighting was typical - generally low levels with variable intensity, multi-coloured spots just to ensure that metering and WB were constantly thrown off depending on where the dancers were positioned on the stage. A step in any direction could cause up to two stops difference in lighting, not to mention a change from daylight-balanced spotlights to softer red, green or blue-gelled lights.

EXIF should be intact but shots were generally f/2.8, 1/250 sec, ISO 3200, manual mode. All shots handheld with 70-200/2.8 non-IS. Shot in RAW. In-camera noise reduction off, minor noise reduction in ACR plus other minor tweaks in both ACR and CS3.

All comments and constructive criticism welcome.

Nice set. I am amazed every year when the dance recital image sets come out at how much talent there is ... not necessarily the dancers (but not excluding them) but the choreography and imagination of the producers/directors at the hundreds of dance galleries that exist.

Thank you for the comments!

Dwight - I agree wholeheartedly. But what I find truly incredible is not so much the level of training and talent amongst the faculty, but the fact they can bring all the necessary elements together with a group of 12 to 18-year old dancers (not to mention those as young as four in the recreational programs). Those kids put on one hell of a show.

Solid set, maybe a bit on the dark side.
On #1, framing a bit more to the right, and include a bit more of the lower side (while not cropping the outstretched hands :)) would have been better.

Thanks, René.

Lighting was dark - shooting wide open at 3200 ISO and still underexposed at times. Will see if I can adjust framing on #1 but I don't think I have much room to play with.

Nice captures. I like #4 for the pose and the fact you can see her face and expression.

Thanks again for all the comments.

The show ran the gamut - ballet, jazz, modern, lyrical, urban, hip-hop.

Very nice, for just a club...

This club has some nationally trained and renowned faculty members. In past years the company (which refers to the performing group as opposed to the recreational dancers) has toured worldwide.
