Best shot of photographer and gear floating downstream on the severely swollen river we just attempted to cross
Best shot of frostbitten toes
Best shot of a waterfallAnything else?
I continue to tell my mum that instead of getting a real job I will just stay at uni and concentrate on winning lotto ($25 m tomorrow night would help)

lol lucky for dp he has a pelican case so his gear wll be fine in the water(weve tested that a few times haha) hopefully the river wont be too high. Last 2 times we were there it was only about 1foot deep at the deepest part, although theres been a lot of rain lately

Do you know how to get to Makahika Chris?
Nope. In fact the only reference I can find on my maps is Makahika Stream on the other side of the Island?
If not, I'm happy to do the car pooling and come up to Foxton to collect.
I can pick you up also, save you some funds?
Or we can just go seperately in case someone needs to leave earlier. Up to you.
Am ok with this, but will need to meet somewhere so I can follow you. Time and place? Maybe outside Farmers entrance by the carpark at the Levin mall. Am driving a white commodore sedan, EKU 828. Like you I am not an early morning person.

That's a little unlucky for yourself (and me, and maybe Chris?), who does not own a pelican case. Yes there has been a far amount. Oh well, I guess we will just get there and see what its like. If its too dangerous we won't cross.
Any other categories?

How about we meet at the corner of Queen St and SH 57 (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&q=Queen%20Street%2C%20Levin&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl)? I have a silver Toyota Prius. Not sure what time Lance (who seems to have gained the role of chief decision maker) plans on going or even which day.

All sounds good. We will look like boyracers parked like that but its cool. It would avoid any confusion as your instructions on find this particular spot aren't cemented in my memory.

haha except non of us have "cool" cars
You see on this map http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&q=Queen%20Street%2C%20Levin&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl find camp makahika(red buildings), right next to it theres a sharp dogleg in the river. theres a track right next to that that goes over the river and joins to the road well be on? thats where we park. About the same distance from the point of the dogleg to the entrance of that track ull c a stream joining the river. thats where we r going

I can't get the multi quote thing to work
As long as we get to that intersection we should be able to work out who we are? As for bot racers, yeah I am riding on boy racer wheels :o, not by choice they came with the car.
BTW I have discovered recently that I have now young ladies talking to me about mutual interests eg photography, who are all of one third and less my age :( Why now?
But yes, I did point them verbally to potn, perhaps I/we should get some cards printed on the cheap.

Gumboots and thermal socks=warm, is what southerners wear. But if you can loan a pair for the day that would be cool, I am around 9 and 1/2 foot size. However, I can not decide on whether I can make the hike until I see the terrain but no matter what, I am sure I will enjoy myself, if if it is just to meet up.

gumboots may be fine? not sure. u wont get your feet wet(as long as you dont wash away downstream) but will be no good on slippery wet rocks unless u want to break a tailbone

multiquote u have to click the middle symbols of all the quotes u want to reply to then click on the reply button top left.
I think we should be able to find each other as long as we park in the same area

Oh thats nice of you to take us all to paris to do a waterfall shoot:p
That terrain picture doesnt really show a lot does it lol apart from the rivers about 30m from the track and there some kind of incline. Although remembering how steep the other side is from memory the road side mite be quite steep(comparing them in the picture)
The waterfall on the corner there is quite a nice little one, hopefully the clouds will be around so we can get some decent shots of it

its a bit of a buuger of a spot really. Theres sort of one 3 meter steep bit and then its fine after that. The other problem is if you cant make it down the hill, you wont be able to see us anymore due to the trees! theres a reason that no1 knows where this is, and thats because no1 can see it :p.Quick question, how are your knees? we found another way aswell but it involves a fence....and getting over it.....it has barbed wire.....

Totally agree, after seeing the shots from you two, I really wish I had been able to join you at the river, for the first time.
All are terrific.
BTW Kaypony, the suit is hard to see, I had to look hard after you mentioned it, and it looks part of the scene rather than part of a person.

Well at least you got to take a few photos in a new area. We felt bad leaving you up by the car. Although you were probably quite glad you stayed back when you saw the state of us when we returned.

Cold. It could have been worse i.e. if there was a southerly/it started to snow. Tony does usually do his waterfalling in the tropical northern paradise of Auckland though....

Thanks SS, I had trouble deciding with or with out the people (the only ones that came while we were there). I was thinking it was cathedral like, but also, sort of a green version of the Arrowtown pics one sees on calendars etc.

two seperate stories actually - (three if you count Wendy's one of a lens-in-the-tide)
one involves a tripod falling over onto concrete with a 20D & 16-35L attached
see: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=400396
the other involves an attempt (success actually) in preventing damage to the same camera whilst falling backwards after tripping over some kerbing in a carpark in the dark at night due to moving backwards while trying to frame up a shot. (you may already know that going on a GKPE photoshoot can be hazardous to your health?)
After painfully picking myself up & actually taking the shot - found it wasn't worth the trouble... (see shot: http://joeseph101.servebbs.com/POTN/IMG_5049-700.jpg - cr@p eh? )
Having said that, I did get to spend quite a bit of quality time at home with my wee boy who was 8 months old at the time so can't really complain too much...

i took a dive over a child's bike late last year... much to my embarassment.
the bike was beside me, and i SAW it, then somehow stepped into it and fell, camera-hand first into the bike, throwing myself over it and ending up lying on the lawn on the opposite side of the bike with my camera (hand strap WIN) still in my hand and up in the air, unharmed, but with a bit of red paint on it
the onlookers rushed over and asked whether i was ok - i said hold on and checked the camera "its working" :)

haha yeh a real phototographer doesnt let a broken wrist get in the way of taking the photo! respect :D
another time i was getting out of the car and i had hooked the camera hand strap over one finger and the keys over another, and was holding other stuff too. then i realised i was going to need the keys in my other hand to get into the house, so i unhooked them from the finger, and watched stupidly as everything else slid off (the keys were at the back) including my camera, which hit the concrete lens-first from about 2 feet up
LUCKILY it was one of the old lensbabies with the bendy barrel, and it totally absorbed the shock, so the lens and camera was totally unharmed except for the mode dial label which popped off and needed to be re-glued
