Last night out in the Canberra mountains was ironic, as I now have mountains of images to process, including a timelapse.
Here is a preview of one I worked on quickly while the others are batching. I was particularly impressed and fascinated by this tree in the darkness. It was incredibly huge.
This is a single frame, 35 seconds at ISO 1600 with a Canon 400D and 18-55mm lens. I took four darks tonight in a dark room just to remove the large amounts of noise. At 35 seconds, i had to stretch it a bit, but I am happy with the result.
I now have a heap to stack as well as finish the timelapse so I will leave you with this...
Cheers,
Baz.:D

You really shouldn't have to use ISo 1600. You should be able to use ISo 400, with an aperature of about F5.6- 8, maybe 11.

I will try that next time for a comparison.

Another great shot Baz.
Couple of questions if you don't mind,
1) Is your 400D modified in any way? I also have the XTi 400D.
2) In this picture and the color Milky Way, you say you used the 18-55 lens. Were the images taken at 18mm? Did you use IS or not? I am assuming not, as I have read that the IS itself can cause problems when mounted on a tripod. I am wondering if I can get something similar with my 17-85 IS lens....
I wonder if my wife would like to go to Australia for our 25th anniversary in September? :)

WOW! I have been looking at your pictures, and those are the exact reason why I love photography. Those pictures remind me of all the star filled nights backpacking in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico.

Thanks everyone. Al, no mods on the 400D mate. Shot at 18mm. What's IS?

Hey Baz,
IS - Image Stabilisation - but you really knew that right? ;)
I am always amazed at the photos you post, and look forward to trying some of those things myself. Definitely need a better tripod though.

Wow... that is spectacular. May I ask what program you use to combine the darks and the image to remove the sensor noise? One of these days I've got to get out to a dark area to try this...

I didn't know that Al, because I have never had it. My 400D must have been the first release. I see all the new ones the IS comes standard. I saw it in the shops when I went into the city browsing last Friday.
