You can polish anything. Use masking tape to mask off the surrounding area of the screen. Depending on how deep the scratches are you start snding with a heavy enough grit to remove the scratches. Then keep going to a higher grit.
Example; 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 grit papers. Then use a polishing compound that has a mild cut.
Remember to be careful how much you sand. Plastic will sand very quickly and the plastic over your screen is likely very thin.
My suggestion to you is not to do this until you absolutely need to and if you must, practice on something else like an old watch face or any other peice of clear plastic before you try it on your camera

I would try some car polish before I tried anything as drastic as using sandpaper. Most polishers contain fillers to fill in in the scratches instead of using abrasives to buff out the scratch. If that isn't enough, use some car abrasive cleaner followed by a glaze and finally with polish. That's how you'd get a scratch out of a car's finish which should be basically the same as what you're trying to do.

This is something I do almost everyday. It is not as drastic as you say if you are careful. Glazes are fine but are temporary. I've done exactly what I have mention on my cell phone and my watch and they turn out like new. Furthermore I also said that depending on how deep the scratches are to use the appropriate abrasive .

I had a scratch on my lcd.
I found a cd repair kit i had lying around.
It's a paste you apply and rub out.
It worked perfectly!
No matter how close you look, the lcd looks like new!
It apparently helps protect the surface (cd) from future scratches too.

You can probably find a cd kit at walmart.

Go find some Novus plastic polish #2

http://www.noscratch.com/novus/number2.shtml

For this application, use a real small amount.. about the size of a pinhead or less. A little goes a long way. I usually apply it with the tip of my finger. Be gentle, don't press too hard. Repeated applications yield increasingly better results. Gives the surface a nice smooth feel. I use it on all my guitars. They feel and look like polished glass. Try it on a cassette or CD case first and see for yourself. I guarantee you'll find a ton of uses for it around the house.

I've been using it for almost 25 years.
