Posted elsewhere but thought I would share here. I was playing around with strobes in the backyard this weekend to see if I could over power the mid-day sun. I know the background is a mess and I missed half of a foot but the attitude pose my 2 year old me gave cracked me up.:D Shot at f22.

I like the look it gives off. It looks like you did some sort of post processing to make it look like he is almost infront of a backdrop or something. It's kinda cool.

Thanks. That's the look I was trying to get. Now I just have to try it with a planned set up so that the background isn't such a disaster.

I like this effect! What flash and settings did you use (I saw you were at f/22) what lens, etc etc etc.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! :)

Thanks. I used two Alienbees B800's, one camera left with a 22" Beauty Dish and the other camera right with a Giant Softbox (both set to full power). Camera and settings were: 50D + 17-55 f2.8 IS @ 23mm, f22, 1/250, ISO 400.

I think it has some great aspects. Personally a crop vertically somewhere near the edge of the balcony and horizontally just above the knee would sort a lot of issues out for me, including the breach of the rule of thirds, foot, background etc.
Would be interested to know if you agree.

Great lighting and a good shooting angle for the child's height. He looks pretty tack sharp on my monitor and WB is just right. Nice job, I'd say!

Thanks everyone.
SAB_Click, I do agree with you. Thanks for the input. This was really just a test to see how the lighting would perform outside on a sunny day. I set the lights up as fast as I could and just messed with camera settings until I got the exposure I wanted with no thought of composition or background.
