Looking for a good Monopod for a gripped 40D and 100-400.
Will be using at an Airshow and don't want to drop a ton on a carbon fiber one and a High Dollar head. I also don't want a cheap one that want last a year.
Thanks Fedxpress

Hello Fedxpress!

I recently bought this one for use with my gripped 30D and 100-400:http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/353309-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging__679B_Monopod_Black_wit h.html

Someone on this forum recommended it as it is the one they use.

I have never used a monopod before and I am really enjoying this one.

It holds my 30D and 100-400 just fine!

Get a Manfrotto system. 680B 4 section aluminum monopod + 234RC tilt head. I used that setup to shoot at a zoo with a 40D and 70-200 2.8IS no problem. And it doesn't cost much. Bout a hundred US bucks?

Another vote for Manfrotto. I have the 679B with their tilt head and it works just fine with my 100-400.

Yes, Bogen/Manfrotto produces a quality product. I have the model 681B monopod with attached model 3232 swivel/tilt head. Setup supports approximately 26-pounds and works
great with my gear.

Are you sure you want a monopod for an airshow?

You need to be able to swing a full 360 degrees in some cases and at varying heights. I would just hand hold it and skip the monopod. I find my shots turn out fine with out one and I often find myself spinning around or shooting up for overhead shots which wouldn't be as easy with a monopod attached.

The 100-400 might be heavier than my 70-200 and 1.4x TC but I just rest in between passes if needed. There is a guy in rockford that handholds his 500 f4 at airshows so the 100-400 can be done.

Just a though.

Monopods are notoriously limiting for motion in all directions. IMO, you'll get frustrated in very short order as will the folks around you after you've whacked them once or twice by picking the whole thing off the ground to pan quickly! ;)

I recently started using a Benro MC-66 M8 CF Monopod with a Manfrotto 234RC, the combo works great and it's not expensive at all. I've only used it out in the park a few times and for a wedding and gift opening so i'm not sure how durable it is yet.

Well I have shoot 3 airshows at Duxford Most everything is over the runway or at least 180 in front mostly 120 degree. Mostly WWII aircrafts and after a full day on the ramp shooting low SS for the prop blurr I think the Monopod might help with camera blurr.

Thanks I will check into the Manfrotto
I was looking at the 681B with 3229 head, they show 6LB support is this enough?

Fedxpress, the Bogen/Manfrotto 681B monopod with model 3229 swivel/tilt head (quick-release) will suffice. B&H has this monopod combo set for $89.00 with free shipping. Happy shooting!

I bought the 679B waiting for it to get here. You can't go wrong with Manfrotto.

I probably wouldn't use a monopod for an airshow. I've been to two of them and didn't need one.

The problem with them is the wide swings you'll need to make in which you'll have to make your feet and whole body pivot around the monopod axis so you can keep your eye to the viewfinder. It's awkward to do and you might just end up making it harder to track the aircraft smoothly.

But if you have to get a monopod the 680B and manfrotto pivot head are a good inexpensive choice for around $75.

I ended up ordering the 680b and the 3229 from B&H 100.90 with shipping only on the head.
Thanks for the input, I will see how it does at the airshow.
