Going To California, What would you bring?

I'm Flying out of Orlando tomorrow afternoon and will be arriving in San Francisco. i will be spending the next month in california in San Francisco/San Jose/ Lake Tahoe/ a couple days in Reno and other towns in Nevada. i've been many times before, I'm mostly going out to visit family but while i'm there I will be doing a combination of archetechure, landscape/nature, and candids of my friends/family. I don't Want to bring my full pack this trip, I was thinking of going simple with my rebel xt,14mm 2.8, and the 580ex2.


My question is: What would you bring?
Keep in mind that i'm trying to go light weight

I voted for XT body (for light weight), 14 2.8 for landscapes/architecture, and 100 2.8 for family candids.

24-70, 70-200, and 100-400 will give you coverage, but at the expense of weight. Your call.

As you said "light weight", the lightest kit would be the XT and 50/1.8. Nonetheless, I voted for the XT, 14/2.8L, 24-70/2.8L and 70-200/2.8L, although the last one is hardly light weight.

We took our children to San Francisco a few years ago. I was born and raised there and had my husband drove us past the home I was raised in. I took some shots of the house and had to pull out my widest lens and still had to back up to get the shot. I'd forgotten how close the homes are together! Go wide and then go long, and take a fast prime for available light shots. Will you be taking the obligatory tourist shots of the Golden Gate Bridge? You'll need a tri-pod :-)

Hauling heavy camera gear around can be a pain. I picked up a Panasonic G1 with two lenses. The entire kit fits in my handbag :-)

The XT, 14mm, 50mm, and flash if going light is your main objective.

Camera gear? I'd take lots of cash and some suntan oil.

Go wide and go long is what I had last year when I visited SF to San Jose. The PCH is going to need both. The 24-70 was my walkaround lens, and since I don't have a 14mm, the 16-35 had to do. Enjoy taking pictures, you won't regret the extra weight!

I don't understand. You own a 24-70, you go spend one month some place, and you're not yet addicted to that gem? weird.

I was born and raised in san francisco/san jose area, but now reside in orlando florida area. on my last trip i packed the 70-200/24-70/14/15fisheye, and while i used all of them, i mostly stuck with the 14/15fish

you can get by with a 24-70 and a camera body here in l.a. lots of neat stuff to see. the zoom lens would be a bit much unless you are shooting something specific.

If light weight is that important, pick up a G10 :) I voted for MKIII/14/24-70/70-200 though!
