Theatre vs Concert

Hey Guys,

I just was notified that I have secured a pass to the Rise Against concert on Monday. Up until now, most of my low light shooting was in my high school theatre. I know the concert will be pretty similar as far as light goes but I was wondering if anyone can compare the light. Does an average concert have more or less. I should be fine on my lenses, I have a Sigma 70-200m /2.8 and a nifty 50 /1.8. I plan to be shooting with those two lenses at 1600 just like I would in a theater. Anything would be much appreciated. dont use auto WB. pick one (usually tungsten) and stick with it. even if it isn't the right onw, you can adjust it in post as a group. if you shoot in auto you will end up changing each one individually.

Will the amount of light differ much? During our last production, Cats, my typical exposure was around 1/60 on 1600 ISO with the aperture somewhere around 2.8.

use a slower shutter speed to absorb light. try 1/30 and experiment with the available lighting

I would imagine that a band as high-profile as Rise Against would have a pretty substantial lighting setup and would probably be quite energetic on stage...

If I was you I'd use the zoom (as a 2.8 aperture should be wide enough), shoot at MINIMUM 1/125 shutter speed otherwise you'll get blurry shots and if you can, keep the ISO to 800, or if they're looking too dark, use 1600. If you're blowing the shots out, bump the shutter to 1/160 and the aperture to 3.2 or 4 - I have the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 too and it can be a little soft @ 2.8.

I think for a big rock show, those settings should serve you pretty well.

Yah I figured I'd be at pretty much the same settings. I really hope I can shoot well at 800, 1600 looks pretty nasty on my Rebel. I'm off soon, hopefully it goes well. Thanks guys!
