Why the red line on the L's?
This must come from the banking phrase, "in the red".
Probably been thought of before!! :o

Marketing technique so you'll feel bad when you don't have one? ;-)
(Then, when you do have one, they'll show you a pic of a white one! Next year, Flourescent RED!)

I honestly don't know the answer to that one.....if I had to hazard a guess I would say its just their signature trademark......they like to see that red line running around that white lens body!! PhotosGuy is probably right....probably just Canons way of trying to build a prestige into owning a certain type of Canon lens

Why do Levis have a red tag? Why to Mercedes have a triangular symbol on them? Why do glasses have "gucci" written on them? They're all status symbols, made to make people think more of you because you have more money.

...to make people think more of you because you have more money. Well, that's just wrong! Anyone who has a clue knows that that should read, "...because you had more money." (And NEVER will again!) ;-)

I think it's the signature for the L lenses, in the same manner that the non-L lenses also have different colored stripes. If I remember correctly, the non-L DO Lenses (or is it the non-L IS lenses?) have a green stripe...:)

Why the red line on the L's?
Canon engineers researched the whole idea. The chromographic/demographic test results collected from focus group questionaires proved the best choice was the red color. The other choice, white, was deemed too hard to notice.

I think the red line should be restricted to f2.8 and faster lenses, because everybody knows that red ones are faster :-).

Behold the thin red line, the brotherhood of blood. Well the bank account is bleeding.

I've got red stripes.
I've got green stripes.
I've got gold stripes.
Each has their place in my kit, and each gets used according to the circumstances.
Red does have it's advantages over the gold, but not many over the green.
But given the choice, it will be red soon to replace the gold. I just shot a portrait outdoors, and fortunately used 2 different lens to do the shoot. The red did outperform the gold. (16 to 35L vs 28 to 135). Should have shot the green just for comparison.
Money may be an issue, but the price of non-L is a worthy down payment on an L.
I like my 28-135, but I see it being replaced soon.
