What would be a good deal for a wedding package
Customer just wants CD
A friend has asked me to find her a photgrapher for her wedding I posted in the classifieds but was wondering what a good price would be

George - there are tons of variables. I would suggest that if your friend is looking for consistent, professional results - that she look at $3K and above price point.
As a wedding photog myself I hear "I just want a cd" comment a lot --- the fact is I personally take about 5K photos at a typically wedding - I then have to cull them down to 400-600 that I will give to my clients - I want to edit every one of those photos and ensure fantastic results that will print well and each of them be an example of my work.

It depends on your local market as well as your definition of a quality job. I work the suburban markets of NYC (not the city itself where prices can be much higher) and you can get a consistently good, fairly passionate and creative photographer offering DVD's only for the low to mid $1,000's. Certainly, you can spend as much as you want and there is more talent at the $3,000 level than $1,500, but if cost is an issue, there are good shooters out there at that lower level.

I don't even offer a just the CD/DVD option any longer. Once they say that, you KNOW that they are a price conscious, looking for a cheap photographer. That is when you start educating the client on why they are choosing a professional and why you're opposed to doing so.
Since we take digital pictures they feel that they are obligated to a physical copy of those images. It doesn't change the amount of work that we put into a gig. It just takes away from the print sales, so any digital offering option should be taken into account for lost revenue and potentially lost future clients.
In my book, a digital only package offering would start at $2k for an average quality wedding photographer. That comes out to roughly a $50/hr. gig for the photographer which is still on the low end.

A good price for Yervant would be $5000. A good price for a beginner would be $50.

The avg price point in SoCal is at $3k+ for a wedding photographer with a good number of weddings under their belt.
You should have your friend look on the local bride websites for wedding photographers. Being that it's just around the corner, it might be difficult finding someone available.
