Well it looks like it's time to replace my 18" LCD View sonic. I was wondering if a few of you guys could recommend a monitor. I have never had a "wide screen" and was wondering if I could have issues with the pictures looking "stretched". I have a decent video card. ASUS EAH4350 SILENT/DI/512MD2 Radeon HD 4350 512MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card. The Max Resolution supported is 2560 x 1600. Any help would be appreciated.

You would probably be better off with a not so wide screen like a 16:10 or even a 4:3. For photo editing you want a monitor with some kind of VA or IPS panel, avoid TN panels like the plague. Look for a monitor with 178 degree viewing angles.
How much do you want to spend?

Need to keep it around $200.

In that price range the only thing that comes to mind is the Dell 2209WA.
Here is a link to one of the threads about it.

Currently it's $279 but Dell always has discounts, if you are patient you can get one for around $229 maybe less.

The good news is, there are plenty of good monitors to be had.
The bad news: none will display the full name of your graphics card...

No... doesn't matter how wide the monitor is, your pictures will retain their aspect ratio. Browsers and applications opened to full screen may initially seem strange to you, but you'll quickly appreciate the extra screen real estate.

The dell 2209wa is out of stock at this time. They are not sure if they will be getting any in the neer future. What about the
DELL UltraSharp 2009W
20-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor .

I would think you would really appreciate a bigger monitor than a 20. I know when I went from my 19" CRT to a 21.6 Samsung wide the difference was startling.

Thank you Tom - it needs some updates....
I checked yours out - nice stuff. I really like those turkeys. It looks like you might be from upstate? I grew up (as much as I could) in northern NY.

Western NY. Rochester to be specific.
I just placed an order for a Dell 2209wa. Back ordered until 7/25 but sound like it's worth the wait. Thanks everyone for the help.

please please please try to spend enough money on a decent monitor. Skimping on the monitor and not getting a callibration tool will not be good. We'll see things differently that you intended.

I'm debating on a monitor now and thinking I'll spoil myself a bit instead of settling. I'm also looking at something for gaming as my TV is out and I won't be getting my own personal one until I move out so a monitor will be my world.
HP's and Acer's 23" HD models have great reviews and are around $200. Newegg has Acer's H233H for under $200 and if you need it now, BB has them for $210. It's my decision as for monitor, bigger than 20" is quite enough but since I use it for video A LOT I'm going for a little bigger. Any bigger might as well ave and plug my computer into a huge TV screen. lol

I think I'm going to quit putting it off and get a monitor calibration tool also, I've looked at the Spyder 3 etc and I'm also thinking of a new monitor probably a 2408 Dell. Any preferences on calibration tools?

Consider the eyeone Display 2 as well (I got it becuase it also does luminance which I don't think the spyders do).
I will say watch out with vista and nvidia cards. They tend to like to reset the icc profile after startup to it's own default. Basically your computer boots up, loads the icc profile that you created then nvidia resets it back to it's own default.
I had to download a free icc profile loader from eyeone because of this. I have heard people with spyder 3s have had similiar issues.
