View Full Version : Are RRS and Kirk Compatable?

Will RRS plates work with Kirk arca-type mounts and vice-versa? I read that RRS only recommends their own plates. The reason I ask is that I like the Kirk ball head but I have a few RRS brackets on the way.

Thanks,

Rick Anderson.

I think that should be Ok. The RRS recommendation applies to using their lever release clamps. That is when they recommend you use their own plates.

At least that is what I recall.

I have a Kirk knob clamp on my ballhead, and RRS plates on all my cameras and lenses except one. The combination works fine...

There may be some incompatibility between Kirk plates and the RRS lever clamps but the combination you have should work just fine.

From RRS:

Quote - NOTE ABOUT LEVER-RELEASE CLAMPS: Due to wide variations in other brands of Arca-Swiss compatible plates, we recommend using our lever-release clamps only with Really Right Stuff or Wimberley brand quick-release plates. To ensure compatibility with our lever-release clamps, we do offer a plate trade-in discount. If you already own Arca-style plates from other manufacturers (Kirk, Foba, Markins, AcraTech, Novoflex, or Arca-Swiss), we offer a $22.50 exchange discount towards purchase of a Really Right Stuff quick-release plate. Plate exchange only for identical model; you must send us your plate in advance to qualify for this discount. Their knob type clamps don't have this restriction and can be used with most Arca-Swiss compatible plates.

Cool, that helps. I'm switching over to the arca mount and I'm trying to save money buying used stuff so I want to make sure they are all compatible.

The only place you might have issue is if you get an RRS lever clamp.. other than that they are all very compatible.

WOW , Just when i was for sure i was going to get the Markins q10 with lever clamp, i find myself looking at the arca swiss z1 monoball. I have a kirk L bracket that will fit on th markins but im not sure if it will fit on the Z1 lever clamp ballhead. Does anyone know and should i just stick with the Markins?
Thx

I have the RRS lever clamp on my monopod head and all my Kirk QRPs work fine with it.

I have an RRS lever and just received a Kirk plate for my X100. Fits perfect.

I talked to Really Right Stuff and they told me that if the kirk bracket was made in the last year or two it should work but for my canon 5D (mark 1) it stretched the clamp and it started rubbing against the lever.
