Some look like there is some off camera flash. Some just look heavily processed. Some don't look that interesting. It's kind of a mixed bag.

I definitely don't know for sure, no expertise here. It looks like he uses several different techniques. Some of them look like like maybe he used the Topaz Adjust plugin?
http://www.topazlabs.com/adjust/ Others look like maybe just PS adjustments? Just a guess. Maybe you could send him an email & ask....never hurts to ask!

I wonder if that is anything like leaving yourself a voicemail...

I'd bet money it's just Lightroom. In the pic of the boy w/ the airplane, he's just overpowered the sun which tends to give that 3D effect. He's just blurred the Asian girl with the umbrella and it looks like he's bumped up the saturation levels in most of them.

well he got back to me and says he uses all sorts of photoshop pluggins, told me it would be worth while to become a NAAP member to learn, whatever that is, and said to look up some guy named Zach Arias to learn about lighting...

the zack arias advice is very good. you can learn a ton from his site and from strobist.com

both are similar in content on lighting. strobist has all the info on his sight for free. they both have dvd sets out and i have both. if i was going to buy one, get the zach arias dvd. is pretty awesome and I 'm sure you can find it on ebay.

good luck.
