One of the benefits of spending the last 25 years in the basement of an old building are some of the interesting creatures you find. I've never seen these fellows anywhere else. In metric terms, they're over 12 cm long including antennae.

(We once lost an expensive legal-sized printer to one that committed suicide on the circuitboard. The tech said it looked like something out of a Steven King novel.)

After searching a few minutes on Google, this appears to be a smoky brown cockroach, Periplaneta fuliginosa, over twice the size of the more common german cockroaches. Who knew they weren't our very own mutant species. :)

That's small, you have to see the ones in NYC. I'm waiting to see a fight between that and a rat (small cat).

Nice disguise for a focus test. I saw the ruler, you can't fool me! :)

Actually, good shot. Its hard to get those critters to stand still when under the light.

Fair play to them - there'll be roaches here long after the human race is gone!

Thanks for the comments.:)do you keep the ruler /measure......... by the bed ? This was taken in the building where I work. The ruler comes in handy for shots such as this one. :)

This fella was stuck on its back just outside my office door, adjacent to a public restroom.

Aw, Marie, you are too funny. This has been an interesting thread, Tupe, especially when everyone competes for largest cockroach. The Palmetto Bugs in Florida would be in the race.

One thing about cockroaches, you can't kill them if you don't know where they are at. As soon as you walk into a room and turn on the light, they are just blurs as they head to their hidie holes. A number of years ago (back in the dim dark days of DOS and 1200 baud modems) I read of a sure fire way to find out where the little (and not so little) buggers are hiding. It takes a sack of flour, a mallet and a magnafing glass. You don't need fancy flour or bread making flour (remember this was back before bread makers), just any ole white bleached flour will do.

First step is to evenly spread the flour out on the floor of the room you know there are cockroaches in. You want an even coating all over the floor, counters and on the floor of cabinets. Do this just before it gets dark or very close afterwards. Turn off the lights and leave the room. Make sure and take the mallet and magnafying glass with you.

Second step. Wait until at least 11pm or even later. The cockroaches won't come out till it's been dark and quiet for awhile... at least not the big ones that you really want to get, since they are the breeders. When you think the time is right, grab your mallot and magnafying glass and quietly sneak back to the room. Reach in and quickly snap on the room light. You will see a blur as the creepy little things head for their hidie holes. You might see a little bit of flour dust in the air as well. Quickly get down on your knees and use the magnafying glass to find their track. Follow the tracks to where they went to hide under something, lift it up and wack them with the mallet. Find the next set of tracks and follow it to that one's hiding place and lift up what it's hiding under and wack it with the mallot. You have to be quick although they will be so surprised that you found them that they will freeze for a second, giving you time to wack them with the mallot. Continue on for as many tracks as you can find. Repeat nightly until you can find no more tracks.

Oh, by the way, I just happen to still have a few cockroach erradacation kits left over from when I sold these years ago. The flour's a little lumpy, but it still works. Just $19.95 plus shipping. Only $17.95 each when you buy 3 or more kits. I access all major credit cards and can ship over seas as well.

It's been surmised that, in the event of nuclear holocaust, only two things will survive: cockroaches and Twinkies...
