I have a hard time with getting correct exposure with fill flash. I usually end up with either an over exposed subject with little contrast, or a flattly lit subject with dark background, etc.. Here is my situation.

Outdoor portraiture. Its a bright sunny day outside, I have a big shade tree with nice low branches providing plenty of good shade extending far beyond the base of the tree. In the framing of my portrait you can see the bright sunny areas past the shade of the tree. I would like to correctly expose as much of that sunny background as possible, while at the same time, correctly exposing the face of my subject which is in total shade provided by the tree.

Equipment: 2 speedlites. I do have a stand and umbrella if needed, just not sure how to set it all up and use it correctly. Actually, I do, but I want to see what people have to say.

Can someone help me out?

Yikes -- someone is the signature police here. Who really cares what he is using. :)

I don't ...but it's always better to specifically mention what he/she uses since TTL metering for Canon is different compare to Nikon.
