I have a couple of relatively small (18" x 12" x 5") equipment cases bought at Harbor Freight for $30. Unfortunately, I've changed the internal pick-n-pluck foam around so much, the foam is pretty much gone.

Looking briefly online, the only places I can find replacement foam is from the the main case manufacturers (skb, pelican, etc.) and the standard online photographic/electronic outlets (BH, Adorama, etc.) but it's ALL pretty darn expensive - some is almost as much as the case...LOL.

I know, I could just buy new cases and use these for something else...but...

Does anyone know a source for inexpensive cubed / pick-n-pluck foam ? ? ?

I've searched "cubed", "perforated", "diced", "pick-n-pluck" (w/ all variations) and everything else I can think of. I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons which this stuff is so expensive but it seems someone/somewhere would have an inexpensive source...

Try a hobby store, fabric or upholstry supplier.

I've tried those before, with no luck.

Here's the least expensive I've found online so far:

http://www.thefoamfactory.com/packagingfoam/picknpluckcr.html

This is what I mean: For only $9 more, I can get the entire case w/ new foam here:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=24981-16878-60132&detail=&lpage=none

If Lowes can sell the entire thing (w/ markup) for $24, the foam must be available somewhere for $5-$10...

Why not get multiple layers of 1/2" foam uncut sheets, and take an single edge razor blade to each layer to make a truly custom cutout?! I did that when I was still in high school.

That definitely works, and uncut foam is cheaper and more readily available.

It's just the principle that bugs me I suppose...
