This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #196".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

This round will end Tuesday June 23rd 09:00 am Australian Eastern Standard Time.

This shot (vignette and all) was taken with a point-and-shoot in a poorly-fitting underwater case off Zanzibar after weather conditions had stirred up silt.

Have fun salvaging it!

Time's up!

Well done all for rescuing a washed-out, heavily-vignetted and generally dirty underwater image - they're never easy, and require more post-processing than most images just to look acceptable!

Now to pick a winner...

Spidy - Good job with the cleanup and haze removal. I think the frame works well for this image. The colours could still use a bit of tweaking, though - the blue channel is still far too dominant - adjusting levels to boost the red channel would probably improve it a lot.

ColinUK - Excellent colours! The frondlike corals on the left look the same shade of red as I saw underwater. The haze is still present, though - the contrast could have been improved a bit. The framing is interesting and original, but possibly takes away a little too much of the image - there's more frame than scenery!

Douglas - Great job with the cleanup! Colour balancing was good, but probably a little undersaturated compared with the scene on the day.

NigelD - I like the contrast in this edit - it really makes the corals stand out. The colour balancing could have done with a little more red, though - at the moment the blues and greens are too dominant. Also, the scene is a little oversharpened - there are visible haloes around the corals on the right.

tupper - Good attempt, but the monochrome doesn't quite do it for me this time, given that we're dealing with bright, colourful corals! The haze is certainly less visible than in the original; some of the vignette is still visible in the lower right corner, though.

It was a very closely-run contest between ColinUK, Douglas and NigelD - each had its strong and weak points - but, in the end, I decided to award the victory to ColinUK on the basis of excellent colour reproduction. Well done!
