Today, while using my camera I noticed that the CF Memory card door wouldn't close. Upon further inspection, I saw that a small clip on the CF door broke off. The camera will not operate with the door open. I called Canon tech support & I heard the same thing about the $150 minimum! I called Canon parts & I ordered a new CF door for $7.81. I have a small precision screwdriver to take off the 4 small screws around the door. Here is my question. I don't want to go to a camera shop because who knows what they will charge me to replace it. Can this be done easily by me? It looks like 4 screws around the door and a small spring on the door itself. Has anybody else performed this replacement. Please provide any details or instructions. Thank you in advance for your time.

I recall looking at sites re: the infamous E18 error (google on E18 error). One of the sites showed a sequence of detailed pictures on disassembling an S500 camera - nothing I would like to do. However, an early step presumably would be taking off the CF door.

Its very easy.

With the CF door closed, hold the CF door down with your finger along where the pivot pin runs. Remove the 4 screws holding a plate that keeps the CF door in place. Note that the 2 screws around the wriststrap eyelet are different length and threading than the other 2 screws. Carefully open the CF door and note how the spring is located in the middle of the door (the pin runs thru the center of the spring coil). There is a small notch in the CF door where the end of the spring rests. There is also a the same type of notch in the camera body where the other end of the spring rests.

Now, simply remove the pin and spring and transfer it to your new CF door. Put the new CF door in place on the camera making sure the spring ends are in the notches mentioned above. Close the CF door and hold it in place with one hand while you fasten the metal plate back in place with the 4 screws.

Now, drink a beer and laugh at Canon for wanting to charge you big $$$ to do that for you.
