I am itching to buy me a lens I am sick of the kit lense that came with my 20D, I have been bouncing the idea around of purchasing the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L USM but I dont really have that in my budget and I also learned along time ago not to charge everything you want. So my question to you guys is what can I get in the 70-200mm or larger that I could do some wildlife shooting with that dont break the bank. I would say something that will give me the biggest bang for the buck and decent quality. I mean as bad as I want that 1700.00 lens I just cant swallow that much right now, but I want to be able to reach out and get a few birds, foxes, squirrels, and other things that would sort of fall in that catagory. Please help me in the right direction. Also I dont think I have ever listed my website here so here it is http://www.ncgnc.com Thanks for your time and viewing of my thread. Michael

$1700 is the price for the IS version, the non-IS is cheaper. 200 is probably too short to take photos of small animals anyway.

You've read this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752) already, right?

If your taking pictures of small wildlife and you think you will always be at the long end of your focal length, have you looked into a prime? 300 f4, 400f5.6 or do you need a zoom? Have you looked at the 100-400?

There are plenty of alternatives with greater reach, but if you only think you will need 200mm or even 300mm (70-200 non IS and 1.4X TC for around the same price as the IS version) then I think the 70-200 2.8 is your best bet.

Another option is to look at the 70-300 DO IS which runs around $1000. Not quite the quality of "L" glass, but not as expensive either.
