I had seen the word "chimping" thrown around in this forum frequently and really didn't know what it meant and felt a bit embarrassed to ask. Finally did a Google search on it and found its definition:

Whew, I feel so much better now !!!

That is freakin' hilarious and I have to admit that I am guilty of doing exactly what is described on that page.
I am so ashamed. :o
On a divergent note, I couldn't help but drool over all the lenses on that page, is that a bad thing?

You have to check your histogram at least sometimes, occasional quick chimping is necessary IMHO.

If you don't use the histogram you might as well have a film camera.

This is where I think Canon lags sadly behind the competition. My mobile phone has a camera on it and it has programmable "shutter noises". At the moment, mine is set to "chimp". It goes "Ooh-ooh-Aahh-ahhh" whenever I take a shot.
How come I can't do that with my ultra expensive digital SLR? How come I'm stuck with a boring "click"? No wonder I am forced to make my own "Ooh-ooh-Aahh-ahhh" noises when reviewing the histogram :p :p
*edit: That'd be excellent actually, think about a big sporting event with all the pros lined up with their cameras... Wimbledon perhaps, match point, the leader serves and as he strikes the ball the photographers all press the shutter release to the sound of a full zoo's worth of animals - dogs barking, ducks quacking, cows mooing, sheep going "baaaaa"... :) I reckon it could catch on!

I am a shameless 'Chimper.' I believe the histogram is a tool, and it's meant to be used.
However, I also try to refrain from making the typical "Eek Eek" sound effects or eating bananas while shooting pictures..

I chimp, I'm not afraid to admit it. I'll zoom in on occasion to verify focus, or to check histogram. Occasionally, I'll show the picture to someone else, especially if it's of their kid. I don't think that I grunt, though... I'll have to check... :)
There's one person I know (who shoots with a Noink) who could have the name "Cheetah" tattooed on him... :D I think he does this because he can't with his F5... Perhaps the next time I see him, I'll accost him with John Lithgow's line from Buckaroo Banzai: "Laugh while you can, monkey boy!"
