I was acutally playing a festival with my band. When we finished, the fireworks began. Had to quickly grab my camera and dial in the first thing that worked for me. 50D and my 85mm f/1.8:

What settings should be used to get better results?

Based on my results, I'm guessing tripod and longer exposures should have been used? Standard settings would be helpful and appreciated. My band will be at several of these gigs this summer.

Thanks!

good for being hand held i think. But a tripod with longer exposure is the way to go with fireworks.

These are pretty good, especially for hand held.

The link Smitty gave has some good info. If you're interested, you can check This Thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=710485) for some fireworks photos I posted. I have some general setting listed there and the flickr link has exif for each of the shots.

tripod and cable release are a must.

I like to use between f/8-f/11 and 4-8 second shutter for good long trails.
