What is the best type of flash for macro photography (outside), ringlight, ringflash or normal flash that can be used for other things as well?

I've had some luck with the Cameron ring flash.
At CAD$ 200, it's a good buy.

Well I still use a bracket mounted, diffused normal flashgun for my shots.

plastanka,
I use my 580ex with an extension cord and it works great for even up to 5x macro photos, not to mention it also works great with all my other lenses ;)

id say if u have the money get the mt-24ex..if u dont 430ex on bracket will be fine..a lot harder to use tho..id know as iv used them both ;)..mt-24ex is silly price tho.
if u look at lordv shots his are 430ex and bracket homemade diffusers..lighten cant be any better..but its hard to use..takes alot of practice..the mt-24ex is easy..a kid could get a spot on exposure shot every time with it.if u go to my flickr gallery my high mag macro at 1:1 and past is taken with mt-24ex with gary fong puffer defuses

I use the Sigma EM-140 DG macro flash. Much less expensive than the Canon macro flashes.
