This is certainly an interesting subject and can surely provide some instant "grabbers", if composed and shot well.
With your shot, fireman_gaz, I'm not really sure what you were trying to capture or why you are capturing it. It ends up being a snapshot otherwise.
To me there are three elements in this "shot" and only one is visible.
1) The firemen; 2) The item they are holding (the hose pipe) and 3) The jet of water
This is your foreground, main body of image and background elements. Some would argue that the recepticle of the water is also a subject.
I can see 1) clearly, only.
So, what I am saying here is composition. The subject matter is good, the framing and "telling some kind of story" or "adding interest" is missing.
Exposure wise, with the sun in front of you and to the right, this does not help the shadow on the firemens backs. This shot makes their backs the "prime subject" so light it as best you can. I think an "fill-in flash" would have helped here.
Keep trying, good shot, just needs some interest adding.
