...that is what I got today, I was trying to explain a technical concept, but was not getting far, I got asked to make high level and not to use words with any more than one syllable. Now for fun I tried, it is harder than I thought!

So who here can explain, lets see, how why f-stops go up for smaller apatures instead of down (I could have asked to explain the dreaded X-Factor, but that is asking for trouble and I would probably get kicked off the forum  ).

Remember no words with more than one syllable!

Hmm, that’s rough, and I end up butchering it, but here goes:

Think of an F Stop as a piece of a whole. F2 can be like one half, F4 is one fourth, and F8 is one eighth and so on up the chain. The more the stop, the less light let in the lens.

Here are my two attempts.
- f-stop stops light. Big f-stop means more light stopped.
- f-stop means size of DOF. Big number means big DOF.

(ok, I know I cheated a little on the second ;) )

One whole is more than one half. One half (1/2) is more than one third (1/3). One third is more than one fourth (1/4). One fourth is more than one eighth (1/8 ) but one whole is way more than one eighth (1/8 ). That is why you write lens stops as f/xxx, not fxxx! The key word here is frack shuns :D

Nice! Some people rose to the challenge!

Or should I say some of you guys rose to the test ;)

I think the explainations would be clearer with bigger words though.

Think of a hose. Put your thumb on the end real tight. That's like a small f stop. Less wet stuff comes out the end when you press your thumb tight. That's like a a small f stop that lets less light IN.

When your thumb is pressed real tight, you can squirt real far. That's like depth of field with a small hole called an f stop. With a real small hole like f 22, the stream can squirt real far. When you let your thumb off the hose, that's like f 1.8 and the water won't squirt too far.

The wet stuff acts like the light, but with a a lens, the light comes in. With a hose, the wet stuff goes out.

My Mom wants me to come home now. I think I wet my pants.

Thats brilliant :D
