This is a prime candidate for an HDR image. I would recompose though, I like my shots a little tighter and I would experiment with a wider angle lens to get more distortion around the edges (that's just me though).

This IS an hdr image, not sure if I should be flattered or concerned that you didn't think it was. Also, it IS a wide angle lens, between 10mm and 20mm on a 50D, (so not that wide angle, dammit I want a 5DII!) I like your idea about shooting tighter... will ponder that.

Rambo7, I love the way you did the headlights, way better than I did. Did you just brush in some white? Thanks!

Can you give me more info on how the image was shot and post edited? How many frames were taken to create the HDR? 3, 5, more? What software did you use to create the HDR?

It doesn't look like an HDR to me (first pic). It just looks like the sky was bumped in saturation and some playing around with the contrast was done - that's about it.

3 shots, I think 2 stops apart, Photomatix. The sky was very bright, there'd have been no way to get the detail otherwise.

It looks really good, but it doesn't have that "punch" that HDR images typically have. check out stuckincustoms.com (if you've never been there).

I have a different take on HDR... if the picture has too much HDR punch, then it looks unreal. And I generally don't go for unreal. When I look at a picture and immediately think "HDR", then, for me, that's too much HDR.
Here's an pic of mine where I deliberately abandoned all pretense of "realism"... do you think this pic has enough punch? If not, then I may need to revisit my HDR technique.

This could be tighter (I quibble). I find the crop pattern in the background a bit distracting , it's as if they are an extension of the truck itself. the grill is the interesting element to me, not so much the rest of the elements.

Yeah, that photo stands out as HDR. The other one looks like a really nicely composed shot, just doesn't seem to have the surreal HDR qualities to it.

I think both images are pretty good, though the truck is more visually appealing to me. Nice work on both.

I think the first image that was originally posted very nice. Everything is nicely accentuated and it is a very pleasing to the eye photograph. I have nothing to complain about it in my opinion. I love the flowers, the hay, just need to touch up one spot in the sky where there is a blotch.

Congrats!!!

HDR doesn't always mean "surreal". An HDR is an image that encompasses all tonal value throughout the dynamic range. Its up to the photog to decide whether they want a surrealistic "illustration type" image or a true to photo technique. Most people go for illustrative look which is what people relate HDR photography too.

Nice images all around.

Cheers.

Also I think that you can't relate a city photo to a country photo in HDR, especially since the city one was taken at night. Everyone has different opinions on HDR yes, but the truck to me does not look overdone, the city one however, yes IMHO.

FWIW, When I first saw your image in the first post I assumed it was HDR.

But well done and not overcooked at all. Good job, IMO.

Thanks all for your feedback. POTN is a nice place to be. We have competitions in our photography club (www.uppermerioncamera.org)... I plan to submit potential entries here first for critique. You will be my secret weapon!
