Probably though I think that it will have some improvements.

I say probably as well. Even though I think canon should continue to seek ways to improve IQ, noise reduction and such and not how to incorporate video into DSLR cameras...

Part of me hopes they concentrate all they can pack into the 1D4 for photography alone; whilst it's rather fun having video mode on the 5D2, it's rather awkward handling, and I shudder to think what it would be like on a 1D body!

Yes, it's in Digi IV so all new EOS bodies will have it, Canon are not going to take something out.

Er, why are the two incompatible? Surely they have teams working on both improvements to IQ and incorporation of video?

Video is simply a software thing and all they have to do is implement that software into the camera. I can't remember who but someone hacked their 40D to include video. It's simple for Canon and it's low cost. They'll have video and they'll have the new VGA screen as well.

Yes.
+1.
The move is toward an all-in-one camera. Somebody is going to do it....sure hope it is Canon...or I have time to sell out my Canon lenses/bodies before the new guy shows up.
Question is...Canon has always been on the top. Will Canon stay there??

i hope not - better ISO, correct auto-ISO and AF implementation is all i am asking for. and shed fat off the device.

Improved video mode on the 1D4 would make it a really ideal camera for photojournalists, which is to say, it will almost certainly be included.

I'm not so sure. AFAIK, rights for video shooting on sports contents, music concerts etc. are sold separately from photo shooting rights. With video option, they may treat 1D4 as a video camera.

Good point but I think the push for an all in one photographer especially for Internet PJ work will demand both.
I just don't want the research and development efforts to get more attention in manufacture with emphasis on video but that's just me. Shooting a film is enormously a different art than stills, they each have their place butI've done the motion thing and have no interest in it anymore.
A friend of mine is in the very situation though where he's traveling the southern hemisphere on a three month project shooting for a book. At the same time he will have perfect opportunities to shoot video in a way that can be extreemly valuable to his sponsors and the reporting he is doing. This is a guess on my part but I would imagine he's taking advantage of the opportunity. He is shooting with 2 of the new 5D's which for many reasons are the best choice for the project in that he often needs the smallest, least noticeable camera to not draw attention.
So I concede that even though I don't want it, undoubtedly at least Photojournalists and sports/event photographers are going to have clients who ask for motion clips as well.
