Is this what it's called? A small piece of plastic that slots into your hotshoe mount to stop dust and crap getting in?
Where can I get one for my 50d in the UK?

Why do you feel you need one? In over 40 years of photography, I've never seen the need for something like that. It appears as though it was something that would get lost the first time you removed it to mount a flash...

If the need is there, save your money. Here's a DIY that may fit your needs.
Materials: 1. Thin piece of cardboard (memo pads backing will do nicely)
2. Electrical Tape -Black (will blend nicely with the camera)
Steps: 1. Cut a strip of cardboard the width of the electrical tape
2. Wrap the carboard lengthwise with the electrical tape
3. Trim to fit the hotshoe with a little friction fit. Slide in.
Good part is, if you lose it, just repeat steps 1 to 3. I'm a DIY kind of guy and I just like to share.

Pretty much like the little PC connection caps.

I tried this once. It kept thinking there was a flash attached because it pressed down the hingey thing.

With my 300D I took it to America and after getting home the first time I went to mount my flash it wouldn't fit! The baggage handlers must have either dropped the bag or put something heavy on top of it and it had squashed the flash mount (Obviously they couldn't read the word Fragile!)
So for this scenario it could be useful to stop it getting squashed

Better to not check your photo gear. You're lucky there was a camera in the bag when it arrived. The "hot shoe protectors" will confuse your camera if it thinks it needs a flash. Like John, in many years, I've never had a damaged hot shoe.
