off camera flash with an umbrella! I finally had a chance to test my recently purchased umbrella and ETTL cable and grabbed a few first shots.

I don't have a lightstand, so I used a PVC pipe to hold my umbrella to the tripod :p

Setup:

-580EX II fired @ 1/32 into a 45" Westcott umbrella
-Canon 85mm @ f/1.8, 1/250, ISO 160
-Diffusion panel for a white bg

The shot:

I'm saving up for a lightstand and I can't wait to use this setup outdoors!

What would I ever do without POTN, strobist, & YouTube. ;)

Fantastic!

Which umbrella is it, size and who makes it?

Very clever idea for mounting it and getting it far enough away from the flash, brilliant.

 Nice shot.

Question: Why did you go the cable route instead of wireless?

Thanks for the comments.

Jannie, it's a 45" Westcott white satin umbrella which can be found here (http://www.adorama.com/WEU45WB.html). Hope that's helpful :)

Tell us about your flash setup. Radio slave? What kind? Base with the plug in it? What kind?

I used a 7' off camera ETTl cord purchased from FlashZebra. I'm too broke to afford radio triggers

Here is the cord (http://flashzebra.com/products/0125/index.shtml)

Strobist isn't great. It's amazing! It opens up a new door for my photography. And I'll get that light stand asap. :) Btw, your work is wonderful.

Looks great! Definitely pick up an air cushioned light stand, like everyone else said. It's amazing what just one off-cam diffused flash can do for a photo.
