Unlike most bees in my garden this brave little'un just sat calmly as I snapped away. With eyes like that, I'd be suprised if he didn't see me.

Wow.Nice detail. It is a fly though (a bee mimic).

I wasn't sure what it was actually, I didn't think it was a bee, it just looks like a fly wearing fancy dress.
A wannabe-bee.

Haha, wow, that is a crazy good macro shot. I love it. Those huge purple eyes are so cool, and yeah, that's not a bee by the way. A fly that mimics bees like RockOne said, but still very cool. Bee's don't look that cool anyway!

Theres a couple of telltale signs for differentiating flies.
Firstly flies only a single pair of wings (The rear pair is modified into small drumstick shaped things called Halteres) wheras bees (and all other insects (excpet a rare small group with front wing Halteres)) have two pairs of wings.
Secondly bees (and wasps) have a set of antennae set between the eyes which the flies do not.
Theres quite a lot of flies that seem to mimic various bees and wasps.
Regardless, its still an awesome photo ;-) !

Cool looking shot! Are you sure he just wasn't wearing a pair of shades? He might have woke up and decided that this was one of those days when he needed to be "styling". :)
