Hello,

On all my lenses i have UV flters or Skylight filters to protect the frontglass as everyone tells me to do. A few weeks ago i bought the 24-70 2.8 L witch is rated as a top lens. Now i have a few questions:

1) Do this lens loose from quality with an UV or Skylight filter on it or not?
2) Witch filter (UV or Skylight) loose more in picture quality when put on the lens?
3) If i use a polarisation filter must i remove the Skylight- or UV filter or not?

Thanks for your advice.

1) Intrinsecal optical quality will suffer from the presence of any kind of filter, even of top quality
2) Should be more or less equivalent
3) Yes

Coincidentally I read all the threads I could find about UV and Skylight 1B filters last night :) The concensus was that a skylight filter does noticably affect the colour and reduces the light more, so a UV filter is best for protection.

It is possible to use both UV and a polariser at the same time - depending on the lens and the filters. Vigneting will be a problem if the rims get in the way, and of course the more extra chunks of glass in front of your lens the more likely the quality of the image will be affected. If you use good quality multi-coated filters then you should be okay.

Then of course there are quite a lot of people who say any protection filter is not necessary because the lens-glass is very tough nowdays. And they say filters can be significantly detrimental to image quality - particularly in certain lighting conditions.

I suggest you search the forums for words like "uv skylight filter" and make up your own mind. I'm almost convinced that I shouldn't be using UV filters all the time!
