The shot isn't any good but it's my first shot ever taken at night.
I would appreciate all comments and tips.

I think its an excellent shot for a first attempt. Your exposure is good (what was your shutter speed?). You obviously used a tripod. No real noticeable camera shake (so you probably used the mirror lockup function and a remote shutter button).

The only thing that keeps it from being great is that it isn't a very dynamic shot (lots of blackish sky and water). Cropping may help -- a panoramic look that gets rid of some sky and water would add visual interest.

On future shots, you may want to look for more interesting and colorful reflections in the water. Or, you may want to shoot in the hour or so after sunset (or before sunrise) when the sky has some color in it.

Other than that, keep shooting! I love nighttime photography!

Thank You rcrobert.
If i remember corectly the shutter speed was the slowest, just one step before bulb in 20D. (i would check it when i get home)
I did use a tripod. The weather wasnt that great also.
Thanks for your tips, i will experiment some more:)

Nice shot! Excellent shot, where on the East River did you take this. I agree about the cropping, make it long horizontally and make sure the horizon is level.

Nice job, aren't night shots fun. I second the suggestion to shoot when there's a little color in the sky (after sundown, before sunrise). You can get some really dramatic effects. I probably would have tried a wider aperture to get the shutter time down. f/8, 4sec ?

Very nice shot. The only let down, was the boring city itself! Not taking away from your skills, they are great. Just as mentioned, there is no colour reflected in the water.

Maybe you need your friends to set up some giant lights with colour filters on them, across the water. :D

so thats manhattan?

i think its a great shot, but i would personally find something to zoom in on rather than having so much sky and river

I love the shot and like the colours. What DxHatchback did to it really brings it out.
