my pp work leaves a lot to be desired, so that much aside, which crop gives the better composition?? 1 and 2 are the crops. 3 will be the original, uncropped, shot...

i will accept any pp comments, too, but my focus right now is on the cropping for a better composition. thanks for the help.

I like #1. It shows the reason for the splashing. I think you might want to warm the image a little. The boy is picking up too much blue from the water.

how would i fix that? i had set a custom white, in another location, earlier. i think that may have something to do with the blue tone.
here, i went into RGB and brought the R up a bit, and the G up less, and took the B down even less. is this better? or do we need more Red??

I like crop #2 best, I prefer the closer image. I opened you image and just did an auto WB and it was a lot closer.

that was another option, but i seem to get criticized for too much "negative space" in my shots while trying to accomplish the rule of thirds....which is why i tossed in the tighter crop, too.
i know this is all personal preference, but some compositions just make you go "WOW" and, of course, that is what i am trying to learn. when is tight better, or a bit more open? how to frame pics, how to put interesting features in the negative spaces, leading lines, etc. all the stuff i never thought about before while shooting for a newspaper.
