this marked the 3rd time i've shot Mastodon, and they continue to rely on a poorly-frontlit show w/ tons of blues and reds and magentas...in other words, a nightmare for us shooters!

still i was happy w/ how these turned out. one of the band members liked 'em so much he got in touch w/ me but when he learned they weren't free i never heard from him again. since they aren't watermarked, i'm cautiously posting smaller images.

Terrific shots! Make me want to check out the band! I particularly like #8; really captures the energy of the performance.

I haven't shot stage stuff for years, but very few bands seem to light with any awareness of the needs of photographers.

Then there are performers like the venerable Iggy who always find a way to move completely out of the light, e.g., he spends about half of the 'Live in Detroit' video in darkness. Of course he goes after photogs he feels encroach on his turf/stage.

Very clever business name BTW . . .

Awesome shots! I love the audience shot - shows great movement.

What lens did you use? I am thinking about a wide angle or fish eye lens - looks like you might have used one of those. I have just started concert shots and look on the forum for ideas and advice.

thanks! i do like #8 myself despite brett's face suffering from a case of head-banging induced motion blur. Mastodon had a funny shooting restriction for this show...they started at 9:30, and we were told to get to the barrier @ 10:45 and we could shoot the rest of the show (which turned out to be the ~10 min encore). they were all warmed up and sweaty by that point, so that actually worked in our favor.

yeah there was a pretty ferocious mosh pit going on and i went with a long shutter exposure to try to capture the kineticism of it all.

if you go to my zenfolio page there's a 'photo info' tab which shows the EXIF info...the really wide ones were taken w/ a 15mm fisheye lens, and aside from a drummer shot using my 85 f/1.8 i think all the rest were taken using the 24-70...this band is definitely not about tight head shots so i don't think i even used my 70-200.
