i'm looking for a small looking bag that can hold a gripped 40d, and 2-3 lenses, one of them maybe a 70-200. however all the ones out there look big and square, or are too complex, or just ugly. the closest to what i'm looking for is maybe the flipside 300, but that bulge on the top back is ugly.

Try a dakine photo bag:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I do like (and use) the Tenba Shootout Mini Backpack:

that is what I went with and I am very happy - looks good and it isnt too big
my only complaint would be the zipper is really stiff, but mine is new and I hear they loosen up

The crumpler backpacks are really good looking. But are a bit more expensive than average though.

Yeah--those water-resistant YKK zippers can be stiff when new. They should loosen up a bit with use. I really like the zippers--the first time I used them was on all my Kinesis belt system stuff that I got four years ago. They are very sturdy zippers.

I thought you wanted to see pictures of people's gear in their backpack. I carry the monsterous Lowpro CompuTrekker Plus AW. I have more gear than you could need stuffed into that bag! Yes, it's huge, it's heavy, but it covers the bases for most things.

I have the Kata R-103 nice looking bag and not to big, fits under the airline seat. I got the 100-400 a couple of months ago and with my other stuff I thought I was maxed out. Just got the flex and mini PW's and another Canon flash and found room for those as well!. Might be able to squeeze another lens in, so plenty of room.

I have a 40D and a couple lenses and went w/ a decent priced backpack that I like and works well for me

ill upgrade to a tenba most likely later on, right now I dont need a $200 backpack, but yes they are nice, a local camera shop carries them and i checked 'em out, i like. but i am satisfied w/ my pack

For your needs I'd suggest the Mountainsmith Borealis AT. The bag does not look like a camera bag, packs easily , hauls other stuff and is well under all airline carry on restrictions

Your kicker is going to be the "gripped" camera. Be sure you find a bag deep enough to carry it with a lens on, if that is how you plan on using the pack.

i use a dakine bag, but for your needs, i think the canon 200eg will be just fine. i used to have it and it was a great bag.

i've owned 2 dakine bags now. the dakine sequence is too large and bulky. the other one i have is the dakine mission photo which is perfect for me. not too bulky and looks like a regular backpack.

I just bought the dakine photo and it is very low key and nice but it WILL NOT fit a gripped 40d with a lens attached. The photo block isnt deep enough, at least not the model I have. I have the 2008 model and they made the 2009 block slightly bigger although i think it has more width and not depth.

Packing a gripped body is easy...just like an ungripped body you should NOT pack your bodies with their lenses attached.
I have written about this in detail on Flying With Fish here:
16/09/2008 – Packing Your Cameras & Lenses Properly : Do Not Attach Your Camera & Lens (http://boardingarea.com/blogs/flyingwithfish/2008/09/16/packing-your-cameras-lenses-properly-do-not-attach-your-camera-lens/)
Packing your bodies and lenses attached can cause significant damage to your gear. I know there are the 'oh I've always been fine packing my gear connected' people, but there are also millions of people who've never been hurt driving without a seat belt.

Yea, in the past year I have been getting A LOT more play for being a travel geek than a photog (despite having an extensive 16 year resume as a full time pro shooter).
In the past week alone I've done two national radio shows, been quoted in Aviation Week and approached to due a short term media-spokesman gig for a large well know airline (with any luck it'll pan out, it sounds fun).
...Really I just like shooting photos though. :)

??? if its the dakine mission photo it should fit. i purchased mine last year so i believe its the 2008 model, but it fits my 40d with grip plus 100-400 lens.

Totally agree with you pal!
Last month bought a Tenba Shootout Daypack, excellent workmanship and material they used to make this bag, frankly speaking I like it more than the Kata 3N1-30 that I got early this year.

I don't think that fits any of the OP two criteria; best looking and simple?

it depends on what you feel best looking or simple is. The tenba has great looks that make it not simple. ThinkTank s a great quality bag with simple looks that don't attract too much attention. The attention to detail in the design of these bags is what sold be on the hardrive and digital holster 40.
There are several other streetwalker versions that are smaller and look great also.

You are right the Street Walker Hard Drive is simple, for some reason I got on a different product page of a bag that had all kinds of gadgets and features etc, that wasn't as simple, but this one does look fairly nice...I like it.
