I am buying one more lens before I call it quits for likely two years. heading back to the starving student ranks and I need one more lens. Now I have the nifty Fifty, the 70-200L IS and of course the kit lens that is in bad need of finding a trash can.

I know the inherent differences, and that one is wider than the other. the question I have, is will the 50 offer enough of a distance between the 35 and the 70?

Another concern I have is the talk about the quality control on the 24-70 where as the same complaint doesn't seem to exist for the 16-35...

I have some children and a couple of weddings as the second photographer, not to mention some landscapes before I leave South Korea..

Let me know what you think...

It is close, but I personally think the 24-70 will be a better purchase for you in that you are more likely to use it then the 16-35. If you were doing portrait, or landscape, or other category where the action does not move relatively fast in relation to your position to be able to take the picture, I would go the other way. But since you are planning on doing some weddings, you may not be able to get where you need to go with the 50. Which is why you need a zoom and then it goes back to the 24-70 will tend to be more useful then the 16-35.

Just my opinion (please take into account though I don't shoot weddings, but my dad did)

24 is (IMO) too close for an all arround wedding lens but i think it is a better lens just not wide enough for a wedding

I just realised I did not bother to check sensor format first (good for me, means I am getting used to my new toy, bad for making recommendations though)

Given that you have a 1.6x format camera, I have to change my recommendation to the 16-35 becuase of what Kawter2 mentioned. 24-70 would be too long of a lens for some situations indoors with the 1.6x (APS-C) sensor size.

For ME the 24-70 would be the better choice, but then after 4 years I have collected almost all of the lenses I needed, so I already have the 16-35 and a 28-70/2.8L. Now if I could just pay off the card I used for the camera (getting there slowly)

Well i better change my Sig, because i returned my 16-35 on Sunday after a long hard think. Could be just me expecting too much, or i could just of had a bad copy but it was too soft wide open and i bough itt for the extra stop but it just wasn't has sharp as i expected

I realise it's more complex to make wide angle and you would expect the 24-70 to be sharper as it's easier to make normal range zooms. Both these lenses i thought long and hard over and i opted for the 16-35. I bought a 50mm 1.4 and a 85 1.8 at the same time and i have to say primes have me hooked right now. So i'm going to think about what to do next i might have anothera look at the 24-70 and buy a wide prime

Aside from gift receiving occaisions or if I manage to have to start selling some of my photographs, it will have to be...but you are likely right I will probably find a way to squeeze a purchase in...

I think what I will do is avoid this board...it certainly loosened my wallet...

The 16-35 is probably one of the best most versatile lenses for video. It has a very close infinity focus point on the wide angle and is light. It is really easy to shoot hand held and on a stedicam. The 14mm is actually better but its 2gs +. I've rented it and I loved shooting with it so now I'm trying out the samyang this weekend. We'll see if the distortion bugs me too much but I don't think so.

The 24-70 on the other hand is pretty crappy for a video lens. The fact that it is not an internal zoom makes it kinda difficult. The focusing just doesnt seem as smooth or easy for some reason. I really like the wide and mid primes for that.

I highly recommend the 16-35 for video work.

There are more complains about 24-70 only because for probably five 24-70 there is only one 16-35.

I am assuming that you are shooting with a 1.6x body because you mention the kit lens. My favorite combination for 1.6x format is the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and the 70-200mm f/4L IS.

I would not be happy with the 16-35L + a 70-200L because of the wide gap between these two lenses. I tried to use a 17-40L + a 70-200L and found that the gap was far too large and right where I shoot a lot! Owning a 50mm f/1.8 Mark-I lens did not make up for that gap.

Had the 24-70L (as well as the 17-40L), and now have the 16-35L II and couldn't be happier. Incredibly sharp lens.

whoa, way to dig up a 6 year old thread! I too have gone from 24-70 to 16-35. I'm filling my gaps with a 50L 85 1.8 and 70-200. It was a very tough decision for me but I prefer my 50/85 combo much better.

am I confused, but he shows a 5d2 on his gear list... so at FF he really wouldn't have too much empty space between the 35 and 70 with the 50 in there. I would put the 16-35 on your 1d and the 70-200 on the 5d2 and you're really well coverd

The original OP thread is from 2005. I think everyone is now responding to mpicmotion(Marvin) who has a 7D. Yeah it is confusing unless you read thru each thread.
