I recently purchased a used 1ds and was wondering if it's possible to change the capture / viewfinder format from 8x12 to 8x10"
Also, how can 1 find out haw many images have been taken during the life of this camera? (I can't find this info in the manual)
Thanks, Airpix

I don't believe you can change viewfinder format in camera. I know you can't on the 1DsMkII. You could get a different focus screen with a grid, but I doubt that would help much.
As to number of shutter actuations; other then asking Canon when you turn in in for servicing or maybe a hacker program there does not appear to be any way for any of the Canon DSLR cameras to let you know that. For all I have been able to confirm, even Canon may not be able to do this. Your 1Ds should be good for over 100,000 actuations though so it is unlikely you are even close to that yet, but you could always have canon service and replace it. Personally unless it was a critical component (like no back-up camera) I would wait for it to fail before worrying about that.
Just what I have found to date.
You have a great camera, have fun.

The format is 3x2 (the 35mm film standard), one day we may see multi format cameras but as the 1 series Canon's are pro cameras they figure you know how to frame and crop images.
you'll find out about shutter actuations (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=495273#post495273)here (http://showthread.php?p=495273#post495273). (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=495273#post495273)

I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. Been using Pentax 67s for 15+ years and the 4x5 format has stuck with me!
