I did a fairly in depth test of my latest lighting mod, and figured since I couldn't really find good comparisons online before buying, I'd write something up.

The grid:

Portrait with softbox + grid at 1 meter:

Check out the post for the full writeup, and ask any questions here or in the blog post comments.

Short version. I like the softbox used in close, and with the grid, for a soft, yet volumetric light. It's good for character studies of male faces (my preferred subject matter) but could work on flawless female faces as well.

Just for the sake of clarification, Ben, are you using the XXS or the XS softbox? Your blog says the dimensions are 30 x 40 cm which is correct for the XXS (12 x 16 inches) but then parenthetically adds that it is 16 x 22 inches which is the size of the XS Chimera.

Thanks,

Dave F.

Whoops, good catch. It's the XXS, sorry I got mixed up on the inches.
