I just ordered a 580EXII, I know absolutely nothing about bouncing the flash or using the flash, any ideas for information on bouncing or the 580 itself? I'd be willing to buy a book if it would be worth it. Thanks

Your flash will come with a manual.

Bouncing can be as simple as pointing the flash head at a surface that will reflect the light back toward your subjects. It could be up to the ceiling or across to a wall etc. In a reasonably sized room, you can even turn the flash around and point it up over you head. But the time the light bounces around and gets back to your subject, it should be nice a soft.
If you have the flash in E-TTL mode, it will automatically meter the output to give you (what it thinks is) the proper amount of light for your exposure. You can tweak the level by adjusting the FEC (flash exposure compensation) on either the camera or the flash itself.

Two things there - dump the tupperware - bounce your light.

In simplest terms, ETTL works by firing twice. The first is a preflash. It illuminates the subject/area, that you have the camera pointed at, so the sensor can determine how much light is needed. The second flash, which happens almost simultaneously to us mere mortals exposes the subject/area. You an use FEC to adjust the flash output. As others have said bounce the flash.
