I have spent the last few hours trying to work out how to create an ac tion tpo optomise to a file size for the web, specifically for uploading here
It needs to be under 100k jpegs
What I have been trying so far is changing thne image size foirst to 33% to get an original smaller file then trying different save for web options between quality of 10- 25
I cannot find how to create an action that works for all files no mattter what size they are to start with, some are too small e.g.40k, others are too big e.g. 160k
I'd be grateful for any ideas?

I'd start be resizing to a fixed size, 640 or 800 wide, depending how the compression goes. To make sure it stays under 100kb could be a challenge, and if it's possible you might need to learn PS scripting to get it to work. Try google, someone might have done it already.

I haven't got time to faff about with scripting, either phsp does it or it doesn't
If no one knows then no one knows, I can live with that

Resize it. Goto File > Save for Web & adjust the quality to get the size you need which can be seen at the bottom of the pic. PS will remember the settings you set, so an action might work, but maybe not as different pics have different amounts of info. Or you could have the action stop at that point so you can make adjustments.

You can't set an action, even a script that will keep file size under 100k. The JPG file size depends on what exactly you have on the photo. Try with two different images - same pixel dimentions, same compression/quality settings, and you will see two different sized JPGs. Sharp photos with fine details will give you larger JPG files. Even an USM filter increases the size of the JPG.

Exactly!
I think te question has been answered - You can't set an action in PSHP to set a specific file size, atleast not with the save for web commands

Microsoft offers a function here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
The image resizer is very easy to use. Open the folder of photos in Explorer, right click on the image and click on Resize Pictures. You will get a dialog box with four predetermined sizes , or click advanced and specify a different size. Click Okay and it will make a resize copy and store it in the same folder.
